just got my new car and driver and they tested several different models of radar detectors... the bel..passport...to name a few.. they put them through several tests. and radar types.. a possible score of 100 and the KING ???

Valentine V1 scored 97 ... just as i expected

they really liked it.. i know i count on it.. now that my z is stored for the winter the V1 has moved to the Toyota Sequoia.. i think i will have to buy another come spring.. it has saved my ass 2 times this week...

I would never give my V1 up. Just got back a few hours ago from a trip to Daytona to see the family. Took the Z06 of course and the V1 saved me at least 3 times on the trip home alone. Including one laser encounter. Thank god a car was in front of me, taking the hit. Yes the V1 can pick up laser when they are shooting a car in front of you.

It's good to see a current "commercial" review like this. :D There were so many glowing testimonials from users on this site that it swayed me off the Passport 8500. Now I just have to play the waiting game until the V1 arrives. Aaarrgh! Slow UPS!! :(

I have had my V1 hard wired for a year now. Love those directional arrows. Once you had a V1 I don't know how you could settle for anything else.

Having NOT read the article, why did the V1 get that much higher rating?

Was it the Directional arrows?
Did it have better detection? By how much?
Did they like its Features better?

I just bought the EP 8500 for the wifes car ($270 from Best Buy) and I am considering options for the Z when I get it out this spring.

IMO, if the thing is beeping I slow down - regardless of the direction.

Thanks
Fish

I am ready to buy one myself. Anyone on the forum prefer the Passport? I want something compact not bulky. Is the new V-1 as compact as the passport ?

In terms of why the Valentine 1 is the best radar detector in the February issue of Car & Driver:

Radar Sensitivity - 50 out of 50 points: closest competitor (Escort Passport 8500) had 31

Lidar Sensitivity - 10 out of 10 points: Escort also scored 10

Ergonomics and Features - 13 out of 15: Escort scored 12

Radar Selectivity - 15 out of 15: Escort 10

City Mode - 4 out of 5: Escort scored higher at 5

Sound Level - 5 out of 5: Escort also scored 5

So when you add it up, Valentine 1 scored 97 out of a possible 100 points and Escort totals to 73.

Mike Valentine developed the original Escort for Cincinnati Microwave. He was the driving force behind the success of that product and started his own company 6-8 years ago.

While other competing publications also conduct radar tests, Car & Driver has been doing it for about 20 years. Their methodology is very sound and the fact that they purchase the detectors for the test at retail (i.e. mystery shopping) also lends credence to the test.

You may prefer another detector for any number of reasons, but Valentine 1 is the best by far in my book.

I got one for christmas, the only way to get one is through Valentine One, I ordered mine on the web. One word of caution, the price for us Canadians with all the crap we have to pay is around $757 Cdn. to our door.

Also, I heard, through another forum that "radartest.com" is a scam test. "Anti V-1"

Revenuers and radar

I don't leave the driveway without the detector on.

Frankly, It seems that all of the upper end units work pretty darn well. I think it is a matter of personal preference , but more importantly, heeding the thing when it alerts. Out here on the coast they are not illegal, I can tell you that just having it in the windshield and ON when pulled over has shut more than 1 revenuer up when he starts in with I got you on R A D by about then I'm pointing to my unit and so far that stopped the conversation in its tracks. I trust them and have never been sorry (here I go tempting fate)

By the way I have Bel 980's in both vettes (1 moves to the truck when I dirve it)and a passport 8500 in the jag. When I get the V1 it will go to the Z and the Bel 980 will go to the truck.

The key is USE it and listen to it.

I call them revenuers becasue that is now their function, I used to have the utmost respect for our CHP but now they B Hoes to the $$ (for the most part)

R1Z06, I have heard that the radar detectors if caught will be impounded at the boarder. You safest bet is to do what I am doing later this year by ordering a V1 from Sharon at Valantine Research In Cincinnati, Ohio and stopping in to pick it up.
If you plan enough in advance on a trip to the Corvette plant or something in the future that will take you into that area, you will be glad that you made the effort.
