Saw this on another forum and thought I'd pass it along. Don't know anything about it, just found it interesting.

Cross-post from another maillist -- a 520HP 'Vette in 2003?
"GM intends to build 2003, '03 427 Vettes The engines are all individually
labeled RPO-LS88. Which I presume is to resurrect the famous RPO L88 427 of
'67.

They are to all be 520+/520+ (minimum specifically targeting the Viper) The
engines were designed by LPE, and in head to head testing with the LS6 big
block proved more reliable thru GM tests. So GM also commissioned the
building with LPE.

Looking at the test sheets from several motors, I know these motors are
building some 530+/530+ but the spec is to 520/520.

When I arrived at LPE there were 50 GM Mass Shipping Engine racks (each
holds 4 engines) being loaded on a truck. In his shop there was easily
another 50-60 in the works, and in the back staging room another 150 in
various states.

So my guess is they are "pre-building now" for assembly later.

Also I would guess the '03 vette's engine option code to be none other then
RPO-LS88..."

Yeah, I've been hearing about that one for a little while. I didn't know if there was any merrit to this story or just another person's wishful thinking. Thanks for the confirmation, I appreciate it.

I wonder what the pricing on something like that would be.

I do recall LPE's engine packages are not cheap if you get them directly from LPE, but I wonder if, due to the batch nature of such a sale, whether the option from GM might be somewhat cheaper.

Interesting stuff...

Ok, I am going to ask the stupid question.

What the heck is 20054502800

Is this 2005 yr 450 hp 2800 rpm

Or is this some GM part number

Or is this some internal GM code...

And does this have to do with the post about big upcoming news previously posted?

I had heard a similar rumor through my local dealer that in 2003 there will be a limited "special edition" of the 50th aniversary with the 500 hp LPE twin turbo. The local dealer claimed they had allocation for three of them.

The original cross post was first written by Ken Kurtz on the Bay Area F-body mailing list. He has a '96 or '97 green Trans Am that has been to LPE a few times and has had a few engines in it. The last time he went out to pick the car up he came back and wrote that little story up. Hard to not wait for that car, but who knows if it is true (would be great if it was) and the chance of getting my hands on one is slim. Not to mention the outragous price that will no doubt come with it. I'm thinking $75,000 minimum. But I'm just a college student, what do I know? :)

Ya.. and with economy like this... maybe when it is released.. it
