Took a spur of the moment trip this morning to the local drag strip only to learn on arrival that it was closed for Mother's Day. /phpBB/images/smiles/icon_frown.gif Shoulda checka their web site before heading out.

On the way home on a great stretch of four lane highspeed interstate with very light traffic, I come upon a silver Ferrari Modena. What a beautiful car. Middle aged driver (natually) with a passenger. Road ahead was wide open.

I pulled along side him at about 65 mph and shifted down into 3d and got ready....Waited. Waited some more. No go. He didn't want to play. /phpBB/images/smiles/icon_frown.gif

Woulda redeemed the day. /phpBB/images/smiles/icon_biggrin.gif

Guy pulled into a 7/11 for a cup of joe.

Probably never get that chance again. /phpBB/images/smiles/icon_frown.gif

We had three miles of straight road ahead of us. No one around. It was daylight. My V1 was clear and stayed clear. temp was 65. Heck, both cars were even clean. And the other car was a MODENA.

I was at 65 mph in third, competition mode. Windows down. I would have been satisfied with a quick burst to 100.

But was not to be.

Ferraris rare around here. Saw an F40 in downtown DC once in the 80s and now this Modena.

Sorry to have lost the opportunity.

The owner of the local Chevy dealer in Melbourne (where I did NOT buy my Z06) owns a new yellow Modena and he runs it on the street quite often. I have seen him open it up a few times when I didn't have my Z06 but I have met up with him on 2 ocassions when I did have my Z06 out. We both had a nice time of letting them breathe. The Modena looks nice and has a really nice sound when it is opening up the throttle but it has nothing special on the Z06 when it comes to playtime.

The first time it was a quick run across the causeway which is about a mile wide up here and usually a pretty good place to open it up. He got the jump on me since I wasn't expecting him to take off. But, I easily chased him down by the time we hit the top of the bridge. We had to back off due to traffic ahead, but were at about 110 in moments. "advantage, PUSH".
The second time we "ran" into each other, it was a little better place along the beach. We didn't have a place to experience high top end but we did do a quick run from about 20 to 120 and he was not on the happy side of the ride. It did have a pretty good jump to about 70 but I easily passed him at 100 and pulling away then at about 120 we both had to let off. "advantage, Z06".
I believe his dealership is sponsoring a car at Indy this year, Rathman. His father raced at Indy years ago.
They are nice looking cars, the mistique and you got to love that sound, true ferrari. But for the money, I would definitely take the Z06.

I had the chance to drive a 360 6-speed, (and drive it hard 115+) Ill be honest and say that the car did not really impress me.

Yes its a Ferrari, only one of a few, but I would have to say that I would still stick with a Z. The Z can easily stick up with it if not beat the car. But the car sounded like all $130,000 +

The market prices on the Modena/360 can run as high as 210k..for that price they can kiss my @ss..

One thirty isn't bad...for that beauty..200 grand is crazy...

I was running the NY thruway and what should I come across but a Ferrari 1980's vintage GTO..very cool ..no race ...but I think he would have smoked me had he tried..I figured it was worth a shot..you never know.

Ranger its too bad he wouldn't play..most of them wont...but hey as long as they are enjoying the ride what the hell..

Sounds cool, I'll have to keep an eye out for him. Where exactly did you see the Modena? Maybe he'll be in the mood to race next time he encounters a Z06. /phpBB/images/smiles/icon_biggrin.gif

2001 Z06:

Your Chevy dealership is owned by Jim Rathman, yes, he raced at Indy and won in 1960 with a speed of 138.76! He also drove the 1969 Camaro Pace car, the '72 Hurst/Olds Pace Car, '73 Cadillac Eldorado, '74 Hurst/Olds again, and the 1978 Corvette Indy Pace Car! ( I had one of the '78 Silver/Black Vet pace cars, and sorry I ever sold it)!

Zippy, thanks for the detailed info on Jim Rathman. His winning race car is on display at the dealer in Melbourne. I did not know the year that he won and the other info that you supplied us with. I believe it is his son that runs the show down here now, not doing a very good job at it though. The Rathman's have lost a couple of dealerships in the past few years due to various franchise problems/complaints. I think they are lucky to still to be holding the Chevy dealer at that too. They are notoriously bad to deal with which is why I did not buy my car there.
Anyway, thanks again and congrats on being the NCM ambassador.
