Hey all,

Just noticed the other say that my driver side A-pillar has a 1/4"-1/2" split in it, inward from the vent piece located near the base, @ 4" up from the dash. It's a horizontal split.

I don't get in and out of my car in such a way that I ever touch the pillar. Nor do I have any reason to touch it in the course of driving. And, it's in a location where I wouldn't have bumped it with my watch or anything.

Now, I thought I'd just point it out to Carl the other day since I had my car at his place, and lo and behold, he shows me a SIMILAR split in almost the SAME location on his vert. AND, he wondered if I had already told him about the split before, since he recalled having this conversation recently -- turns out that he was recently talking to another Vette owner with the exact same split. So, that's at least THREE of us who have this split that developed on its own.

WHO ELSE HAS A SPLIT DEVELOPING in his A-pillar "leather?" We're thinking that there's a manufacturing defect in the forming of this leather, and that it should be brought to someone's attention. I plan on having mine replaced under warranty.

Please let me know! Thanks!

Kirk, I had the same problem on a prior '01 coupe from the factory. It seemed more like a fit problem. Some grey colored foam was in back of the split. I have noticed this problem on a couple of friends C5's as well. I never had the dealer attempt to fix it in fear they would make it worse. FUBU/LES

Really? You had the problem too? Ok. Thanks for responding. I wonder if it's more common than I (or Carl) had imagined.

Oh, and I suppose I'd have to check out the "part no." for this pillar piece, 'cause I'm thinking that it's sold as one piece (as opposed to the plastic backing coming bare, and leather needing to be added to it) -- so I'm thinking that I'd have the dealer replace the whole pillar, not have them try to "fix" the cut (which I'm sure no one could do too well).

Thanks!

Anyone else? Old or new C5, it doesn't matter -- I'm just looking to see how common this is.

Hi there,
Well, you can actually replace this yourself, as all you have to do is to pull away from the A pillar, toward your e brake handle. Yep, pull out HARD(AND NOT A JOKE) toward your e brake handle at the top only, not the bottom. Your trim piece has 3 clips that hold it to the pillar, and a tab at the bottom.
This is how you can check, and yes, it is the whole piece.
I have sent this thread to Dave Peacy, so that he can readup.
Best to you, c4c5

c4c5,

1) I wouldn't have a problem tackling this myself -- but I think I understand/heard that warranty items need to be ordered and installed by the dealer. Is that right? And, since you seem to know a good deal about this (and many) topic(s), do you feel that this would, in fact, be covered under warranty?

2) Please excuse me, but I'm not sure who Dave Peacy is. Please let me know how he might help (and if he can/will)!

I know this seems like a petty complaint/problem, but the car's only 7 months old, and I can't stand looking at this on an otherwise new & beautiful car.

Thanks!

hi

Dave Peacy is the brand quality manager for Corvette, and he always is interested in the different things that Corvette is experiencing. He tells me to let him know if there is anything that may concern members of the Corvette community.
As far as the warranty, it really depends, as long as you show the dealer, I am mostly confident that they will work with you so you dont have to leave it at the shop for a 3 min procedure.
Best to you, c4c5

Kirk, as I said I am sure I will have 5-10 Vettes here this week for Zaino and I will check them out. :)
Thanks, Carl. Hey Carl -- can you set me up with the person you deal with at Briner (sp?) Chevrolet so that I can get this taken car of? I appreciate it.

Thanks c4c5 -- I'd be interested to hear what Dave has to say about this (and to know if he's heard of it before).
