Wow, this is a impressive site! I find myself in a position where a second car, "just for fun" is now possible. I must admit that even though I once owned a 71 LT1 I never really thought about owning another vette. I really had the Honda S2000 in my sights, but with that cars tranny issues, and other "quality issues" I have started to think about a Z06. What I would ask of you owners, are several questions. The S2000 has a MSRP of 32,800+ add a hardtop for 7K, and pay the dealer 5-6k just because he has it in stock. This puts the S2K into the mid 40's. How much more would be required for the Z06? What should I expect in the fit and finish area? How much shop time has your car had since you've owned it? Has GM worked with you on any problem areas to your satisfaction? Thanks for your input.

Chipster,
Welcome!
I had always been a small, nimble car guy until I sold my 94 RX-7 and bought a 2002 Z06.
Love the car even though at 700 miles I am still breaking it in and haven't really put my foot in it. The car feels much smaller than I had feared. People claim it has a long nose, but it doesn't seem much longer than my RX-7 was.
You can easily buy a 2002 for $1000 under MSRP or about $49,500. Probably will have to wait for a month or so though. There is a few dealers on this site that can help you out there (Rick Daniels for one).
I have had two problems so far. One was a locked in active handling fault which was "fixed" by having the dealer cycle the steering lock to lock 100 times to break in the front wheel position sensor. I was a little skeptical, but the fault hasn't returned in two weeks. The second is an intermittent sticking throttle. Took it in once for this and the dealer claimed he couldn't duplicate. So I took it to another (where the car is tonight). They found a bad throttle position sensor. New part due in tomorrow.
Despite these two minor annoyances, I would recommend the car.

Get the Z

I thought you could pick up a S2K for sticker...maybe not. Even at sticker plus the hardtop you are at 40K. Guess it depends on what you want, but if you want some kick ass performance/great handling/great brakes there is no question, go with the Z06. The S2000 is a wonderful car...gotta love a 9k redline but to me, it's very pricy for what you get. Good handling/suspension; fun to drive.....but so is a Miata at a helluva lot less $$$.
I've only had my Z for a month+ so cannot address the reliability issue. As to fit/finish, it's the S2000. As to "funfactor" there is NO question, the Z. The Z could certainly use firmer seats w/ better bolstering. GM builds a car like that and "cheats" on the seats....go figure. If you have not driven a Z, go do it...I suspect that will make up your mind in an instant. It did for me, and I came from a long line of Supras where fit/finish/durability were not in question. If they were still made, I probably would have been in another one...another kick ass performer. Just wanted a V8 this time around...love that sound. Who knows what my attitude will be a year from now but as it stands now, I'll be lined up for an '03. TRY IT, YOU'LL LIKE IT!

Chipster,

If you go with one of the dealers on this site (Highly recommended by all who have already purchased through them) I'm sure they will work out a deal that is not above MSRP for a Z06. Which is not what you may find if you try to go the Honda route. As far as problem, issues with the Z06, the only issue is if you drive it like it was meant to be driven then you might see a quart of oil every 1000 miles or so.

This problem has been fixed for 2002 :) I have not heard of any Z06 driver that would not buy again. And some have already moved up to the 2002 model.

I am very happy with my Z06 and who knows ... Maybe number 2 will be an 03 one :D

Drive it

Chipster,

I agree, go test drive the Z06. If your anything like most of us, after a good test drive on the highway (0-100 ;) ), you'll be sold.

If you go with the Z06 DO NOT order from a small dealer. They will tell you that they can get the car and then you wait & wait. Order from a dealer that actually "gets Zs" not one that says
"sure, I should have 4 this year". I have learned that buying a new Z is a whole different ballgame.
The smaller dealer may have rows of cars, even vettes, but that does not mean thay can get you a Z in a reasonable time. Good luck, still waiting for mine.

Thanks for the warm welcome. I've only checked this site out a few times and so far seems like you folks live and let live without a lot of flame and ash. Nice:) If you would not mind, talk a bit about some of the features of the Z06 ie. active handling, HUD, and the like. I know that I can do a search, but it's kind of difficult when I don't really know what I am looking for. My plan is to price both the Z06 and the S2K this winter, maybe some day when it's snowing and it's late in the month. I must say, that even though I now own a Honda sportbike, and have owned a few in the past I am a "Bow Tie" sorta guy when it comes to my 4 wheel habits. I will just hang out here, read what you all have to say, and become a little more familar with the Z06. Thanks for your input.

Sherylann and I have been driving our Z's for a little over a year. I had one minor problem with mine when it was delivered, but the dealer repaired it before releasing it to me.

My wife's Z has had zero problems. She was getting codes a few weeks ago about the engine misfireing, but the problem was she was babying the Vette  and not blowing the crap out of it. Runs great now!! :D

Chipster, I have owned 6 Vettes, with my recently acquired '02 Z06 being the latest. The '02 is simply heads and shoulders above any of my previous cars. For a Corvette, the quality is the highest I have seen, but still not at the level of fit and finish of our Accord EX or the Acura CL Type S my wife will be driving in a few months. If you want a combination of excitement, and performance value get the Z. If you are most interested in sophistication for its own sake (multiple valves and cams) look elsewhere. If you want high grade leather everywhere, look elsewhere.

I have driven the Honda model you are looking at, and yes the 9k rpm redline is there - but the car is pretty gutless (IMHO) until you are at high revs. Well made - yes, brilliantly engineered - yes, but it is not one fifth the excitement of the Z. I have had and driven a variety of other cars, but IMO, there is not a sports car within 30k that matches up to the Z06. The handling, power, braking and overall balance is phenomenal. Plenty of room for luggage too!

Now for the technology. The active handling rates up there with some of the best in the world - it is nonintrusive until you get close to the limits. I have only had limited experience with the active handling competition mode, but it does seem to let you get even closer to the edge.

HUD, seems more controversial - but I like it. Since it is programmable, it can be tailored to just driving around in the city (display speed only) or for the track - where you want tach and other gauge info displayed.

Instrument layout and illumination is excellent, some of the best I have seen.

Try it - you'll like it! :D :D :D :D

I've got a few more questions. Exactly what are electrochromatic mirrors (DDO), and do I want them. How about the memory package (AAB)? This car will be for just me:D I don't think a memory option is that worthwhile...right? Am I correct that the transport charge is still applied even with a museum delivery? This museum package has me a bit confused. You go to watch it built, then have to go back weeks later to pick it up? Is this how it works? I will end by asking what might be a stupid question. Does this (Z06) car have A/C?

Well the price of S2K has not gone down but you can get them at MSRP you just need to check around. www.s2ki.com has some participating dealers that guarantee they will sell the car at msrp also you can go to handa-accessories.com i think and they have the hard top on there a lot cheapier than 7K I think it is only like 3K. Plus you are probably going to buy a 2002 right they shouldn't have any tranny problems, I think it was only the 2001 and 2000.

I think you should buy whatever makes you happy I was just giving facts about prices on the S 2000.

Chipster,
Yes the Z has a/c, the DDO mirrors are self darkining, some people dont like it. The AAB mem pkg resets up to 3 mem settings for seats raido a/c heat mirrors. Very useful. Musuem del is a lifetime high, no you dont have to go twice but most people cant resit yes you still pay del chg.

Remember: No such thing as stupid question, only Stupid answers........

Hope this helps.........

Chipster,
I think the HUD is awesome. I find it extremely useful to not have to lower my eyes all the way to the dash to see my speed, tach and oil pressure.
The electrochromatic mirrors are becoming the standard. I have them on my Durango as well. When a guy with brights pulls up behind you, they self dim. Really cool.
I recommend the memory. The electric seats have an infinite number of positions. Having mine stored is very handy. Everytime someone else sits in it, from a mechanic to my wife, the seat gets moved. Just by unlocking the car with my key, it recognizes I am me and moves my seat to my position, sets the radio, hud preferences, heater settings, etc all to my desires. Also very cool.

Chipster...you asked about shop time...my answer is regular maintenance only. I've had it since October, and it has 15,000 miles on it. I've found it very dependable. It even gets good gas mileage. :)

I have HUD in my new SSEi, love it. Also have a 300M. I keep looking for the HUD in the 300M, don't have it. And for those who might be interested, the SSEi eats the 300M and don't even spit out the small pieces 0 to 100.:guiness:

Chipster,

I have read the others' comments and think they have answered all but the toughest one, should YOU buy a Z06. Here are my personal experiences: I have owned a 246 Dino Ferarri, Several Datsun/Nissan Z's (heavily modded to get some level of low-end torque), an Acura NSX and now a Z06. I enjoyed each but I went through all of them to discover that the low-end torque we have is where the most fun is at FOR ME for everyday driving. The technology in the Z06 will give you the most performance per price in any category I care about. If you like the sound of a high revving little motor trying to move you along that's OK. If you like barely accelerating and seeing all the traffic fall back in your rear view mirror, join us, the people with the big grin on their faces.

I've had 40-50 cars in my lifetime, and 7 Vets, 4 of which have been new C5's......The 2002 Z06 is my all time favorite car. Period.

If you can afford a Z06......Do it.

Zippy :) :)
