...I wasn't missing much IMHO.
The car is obviously stunning visually, but... I wasn't too enamored w/ the cramped & unrefined feeling cockpit, offset pedals(I went to push in the clutch, but the brake pedal was in it's place-YEOW!!!) and the actual power delivery of the engine...
The power and acceleration are deceptive, and you're really going faster than it feels you're going. I drove my friend's Viper(he's also a Z06 owner on this forum;-), that dynoed @ 434hp/486tq. The car felt NOWHERE near that powerful. The power delivery 'pushes' you, w/ all kinds of in your face torque, but does not give a 'pull' sensation @ all. 5500 RPM-the show's over...
The car is definitely fast, but I would not give up my Z06 or ZR-1 for it, even if I could have the Viper @ a cheaper price...

I have a z06 and my best freind has a 99' GTS ACR Viper. I have driven both cars extensively. Take it from me, although the Viper is a little faster accelerating. My Z06 makes up for it in a countless amount of other categories. The Viper feels like it's going to fall apart at each bump, has absolutely no luxury features(i.e. cruise control, traction control, cold a/c, etc.)It also gets disgustingly poor gas mileage and is not nearly as comfortable as my beloved Z. Lastly ,you are right, it does not give you that pulling effect, therefore it does not feel like a sports car. The Viper feels like an F-350 on about 3 stages of nitrous

I've also driven both a Viper GTS and a Z06 but I didn't feel so strongly about the so called lack of features in the Viper. Obviously the Viper has fewer options and is by no means meant to be a luxury car but you gotta appreciate what the car was really meant to be... a savage torque monster. And that it has achieved very well. The Viper was the first of the two that I drove and I was very impressed with its pull. I drove a new Z06 with 87 miles a month later at a much higher elevation and temperature than the Viper and it didn't feel as strong as the Viper, though it was still impressive. However I truly believe if the elevation was lower, the car was broken-in properly, and it had the extra 20 hp that the 2002 will have, it would make a significant difference. And considering the 2002 Z06 will most likely be only about 0.2 seconds slower in the 1/4 than the current Viper, I think the Z06 is a much better value and that's why I chose it. /phpBB/images/smiles/icon_smile.gif

Have to agree with you all. Drove a VIPER GTS in an autocross in 99, and tho it was faster than my 1990 L98, I had to ask the guy where the power seat button was and he said.. "what button?" And now in my Z06, I couldnt agree more that the Z is the CAR!

I agree that the build quality of the Vipers I saw and rode in was below average. With all of the financial woes of Benz-Chrysler, I wonder if these problems may manifest themselves in the new cars.

Yes, incredible torque and power, personally I like the boldness of the styling of the current model. However to me, the lack of features, build quality issue, and price, drive me away from the car. As for the relatively minor performance differences? Well,nothing that a 427 cannot deal with...
