Driving the 02 Z06 tonight, and all the sudden the half full tank of gas went to completely empty and the check gauges light came on and the Low Fuel on the DIC. I reset that and it showed absolutely no fuel blocks on the HUD but i just filled the car up yesterday? Whats up with all that? I turned it off and re-started, still bone dry according to the gauge. The fuel gauge in our 99 convertible acted up too. It took it forever to go from showing empty to full after you got gas. Almost 20 mins of driving. Any thoughts?

Step one, make sure the gas cap is good and tight. That messes all sorts of things up if it isn't.

Step two, warranty work???
Anyone else???

I've had it happen twice. 2nd time seems to have worked. Anyway, if you dump the codes in the PCM, you'll see that the passenger side sender has a fault (I think fault here means shorted).

Take her into the dealer and get her fixed. It shouldn't take too long.

And my Z registers new fuel immediately - you shouldn't have that problem.

Yea I dont think its anything big and major. Just a short of some kind. But its just a pain in the butt to take it in, go through all that. Guys will crawl all over the car. Ah I hate it. Will keep you posted as to what happens. Thanks! C4C5specialist, you out there anywhere to offer a bit of advice? Thanks

You've got a bad fuel sender. Apparently it's a common problem and I believe there is a TSB on it. I had to take mine into the dealer and have it replaced. It worked fine for a couple of weeks and I just had it replaced a second time this past Monday. If you check your DIC you'll see a code. I don't remember the number off the top of my head.

How do I check the DIC without a scan tool? Is it possible to retrieve codes by just using the buttons on the DIC? The gauge on our 99 C5 was fishy too.

Yep:

The "diagnostic display" mode is entered with the following Procedure: Page 8-500

1) Turn on the ignition but don't start the engine.
2) Press the "reset" button to turn off any warning messages
3) Press and hold "options" and
4) While holding "options", press "fuel" four times within a 10-Second period.

For more info, goto the OwnerFAQ (over there <-), and scroll down until you see IPC codes. Click on the link to load up the word doc (JC, please fix this for us non-windowed people).

This will put you into the automatic on-board diagnostics mode. You can manually go through them after the system goes through them automatically. For a more detailed description of how to work the diagosnitics, you can check:

HI there,
After you retreive the codes from the DIC, you may find in 10-PCM the codes 1431 or a 461.
These codes are a result of fuel sensor issues with c5.
Please confirm the codes, and we can proceed.
