For those of you just now getting your new '02s, first of all CONGRATS, and please check the nameplate data on back (inside) surface of the driver's door while opened for your Z06's GVWR. Also, please check the passenger/cargo weight capacity. I would be curious to know this info. TIA.

Could someone who owns an '01 check the same weights as well and report their findings. If I remember correctly, I believe the '01 Z06 GVWR is 3549 lbs and carrying capacity is 399 lbs, thus the car itself (presumably, fully fueled) weighs 3150 lbs. That seems high, but I think that's what the nameplate said on the last car I happened to check.

It will be interesting to find out the difference from '01 to '02 and verify which car is lighter and by how much.

UPDATE NOTE (as of 9-27-01): I know of a new '02 Z06's in at a dealer with a wt. "as shipped" of ~110 lbs less than it's GVWR. I guess the shipping wt. all depends on the added wt. of any gas left in the tank from the factory.

FWIW, My GVWR is 3551. Must be the 3 sets of BSMs.... /phpBB/images/smiles/icon_wink.gif

My 2001 was built 6/06/01.

Wow, worse case so far, 3551-399 = 3152lbs. Best case, 3150lbs. Can this be what a 2001 really weighs depending on which options are in the car?

Now, just need one of you new 2002 owners to take a minute and check yours for the same info. This could be interesting discovery but 99.9% of us have no way of finding out yet. /phpBB/images/smiles/icon_frown.gif

Mine says:

GVWR 3551

and then the 399 for load.

Does this mean that me and the passanger can't weigh more than 399 pounds? Uh Oh....

Front: 1799
Rear: 1752

That's a good ratio...

And in the red corner, weighing in at a svelte 3551 lbs (GVWR)....is my loaded Z06!

GM's claim of 3115 lbs curb weight would be for a base car with no options whatsoever - no BSMs, no electrochromic mirrors, no memory seat, heck not even floor mats! On the brighter side, GVWR on my '99 FRC was 3624 lbs!

Still waiting for someone with a 2002 to report in. While we're waiting, so far we have the comparison data given below. (I threw in a few C4 Coupes).

These are "net" vehicle weights, ie, not including each car's load capacity which is assumed to be 399 lbs and should be same for all model years:

C4 Coupes: Net Wt: Extra Equip:
1990 ZR-1 3550 all options
1996 LT4 3393 no options

C5 FRCs:
1999 H/T 3225 no data
2001 Z06 3152 w/opts
2001 Z06 3150 no data
2002 Z06 ???? w/opts
2002 Z06 ???? w/o opts

Based on this data, I have the impression that "GVWR" includes a full tank of gas in addition to the 399 lbs for passenger/cargo weight capacity.

Most of the "net" weights above, seem biased high especially the C4s. The ZR-1 had the dual roof option so that adds about 24lbs of extra weight with the glass roof stored in the car. I believe all Corvettes ship from the factory with a couple gallons of gas; I
heard 6.5 gals, or probably just enough to fire up the engine for the first time, do a chassis dyno test and move cars around and onto the hauling rigs in the parking lot, then back off at the dealers.

In the case of my ZR-1, I known the shipping wt. was only 3419 lbs. If the weight of 20 gals of gas weighs about 131lbs, then the
"GVWR" given above comes out right.

All C5s have 18.5 gallon fuel tanks, so if their GVWR includes ~100lbs for that, the advertised "curb" weight must be with about 1/2 a tank.

Does anyone know the real story here???

Carl, that is precisely what we are trying to "confirm". Unfortuately, nobody with a new '02 has yet bothered to reply. /phpBB/images/smiles/icon_frown.gif

I'll reiterate the request one more time.

Could one of you lucky members that just picked up an 2002, PLEASE check the driver's side door label and let us all know what it says for the GVWR (gross vehicle weight rating). Thanks.

Zman, et all, I saw that post from Paintdog and found it interesting. So far, based on this one 2002's GVWR, the new model year Z06 weight went up by approximately "one" pound. Thus, does this imply "curb" weight is still virtually the same as last year's Z06?

With this additional input, now we have the following for comparison.

C4 Coupes: Net Wt: Extra Equip:
1990 ZR-1 3550 all options
1996 LT4 3393 no options

C5 FRCs:
1999 H/T 3225 no data
2001 Z06 3152 w/opts
2001 Z06 3150 no data
2001 Z06 3148 no BSM or memory
2002 Z06 3153 w/all opts?
2002 Z06 ???? w/o opts

If Paintdog's car does not have ALL available options, then the 2002 GVWR might yet be a pound or two higher.

I've seen references to "3118" curb weight and "3116" respectively for 2002 vs. 2001. It might be that this 2 pound difference is just about right because of the addition of HUD that counters and slightly exceeds the weight savings due to elimination of the pup converters and tiny bit lighter spin cast wheels.

We still need more data to draw any logical conclusion. Anybody else want to tell us their particular car's GVWR if different from the above? If so, don't forget to mention what options you have on the car.

Dsinned,

Just read your post this morning and read my 02 at 3554. 1753 front and 1801 rear.

Options include memory, mirrors and BSM.

Mark

So, the '02 weighs exactly 3 lbs more than the '01 (GVWR 3554 vs. 3551), just as they claimed (curb 3118 vs. 3115)!

It would be interesting to know how much they weight had to be lost to make up for what they added. Or do you suppose the HUD gear only weighs 3 lbs.?
