Carl:

I have seen the #s on the B&B shortys for the Z06, and frankly, thought there may be a bit more gain than shown on Rat's car. 11HP all at the top, seems a bit low. How do you like your long tubes, and how much gain did you get, if you know?
I can live w/o the precats, just did not want the install hassel of long tubes, but it looks like they are the way to go. your opinion, please.

I have TPIS long tube headers but I kept the main cats, only the pre cats go. David Farmer who races his hardtop with the same headers and no cats got over 45 hp at the rear wheels with a LS1 engine. I believe he put the cats back on for the class and racing he was doing, but do not quote me on that.

Before the head and cam, we got 20 rwhp from the DRM long tubes, no precats, but main cats are still on. I was very pleased. I'm not sure long tubes on a Z06 will net quite as much as long tubes on an LS1 with precats removed because the stock exhaust manifold on the Z06 is very, very good.

Carl; Ron:

Thanks for the information. I think 20HP on a Z06, with precat removal is attainable w/long tubes, too.
I have seen several posts stating that the precats do not hurt the HP on the 01 cars, but I find that hard to believe.
I also think headers are probably a better exhaust mod for pure HP than the mufflers etc. Especially since they cost about the same.
I had planned on a set of headers, but just wanted to do it right, with the $$ involved.

Dennis, 10-11 hp is a joke and a waste of money if you ask me, you can take your pre cats off and keep your stock exhaust manifolds and gain almost that much hp. Long tubes will gain an LS1 engine between 22-25 hp, take off the pre cats(which you have to do on some 2000's and all 2001's) and gain another 8-10 hp, do mods to the motor and your hp only goes up. I can not see spending the same money, about $1500.00 for headers and install and gaining 10 hp, I am sorry but that is too much $'s per hp. Long tubes will be on my Z06 (when I find one that a dealer really wants to sell
) as one of my first mods. I did not have a chance to dyno my car before it was put away, I will do this in the spring time to see what my hp gain was after headers but I will tell you that the car is much faster and the 1st to 2nd and 2nd to 3rd shift are interesting if the car is not pointed straight down the road.

I have TPIS long tube headers on my Z. No dyno numbers as yet but the SOTP gain was significant and the cars new ability to spin second gear and even get a healthy chirp out of the shift to fourth.

I agree with hcvone that 11 hp is not worth the cost of the shorties - at least RAT got an increase - I've heard of cases where short tubes lose power. One factor not mentioned however is the ease of installation. Putting long tubes on a C-5 is not easy.

We have installed many TPIS headers on an ls1s and have gained 14-17hp on the dyno. The cars have had only bolt on parts for mods. We then proceed to delete the cats on one of our customers cars. 7hp was the gain with no cats. Its my opinion the deleting the cats is not worth the time, cost and SMELL!
Gaining 45 hp with LT headers and no cats is not realistic. Maybe 20 or so is.
I also believe shorties is a waste of money compared to the gains. Unless, you want something to bolt on where removal might be necessary. You will gain good power from long tubes and the TPIS headers can not be beat for the money!

hcvone- send me an email! Are you ready for your first mod?

Nate
