175 at redline is also what I've heard. Have you had any other Vettes to that speed? I'm curious as to how much quicker the Z06 got there. From what I've read, it gets there much faster.
With different gearing they'd definately go faster. There is enough hp for well into the 180s. I think if you shift to 6th you'll slow down. Its too high of a gear.
Thanks for posting, it makes me wish I lived in a better climate where I could drive it more than 6 months a year.

Sooooo far from top speed....

175 takes some ba**s. Been there twice and it still gives me the chills. Just wish it was in my Z06.

Great work. Now, would somebody please try 373s in the rear. Inquiring minds want to know.

I would think 3.73s would slow your top speed. If you are running out of RPMs with the stock 3.42 at 6500RPM you will run out sooner with the 3.73s. I think is what really needs to be done is to have a taller 5th gear. This will give you more room for top speed.

Steve Coles Powerloader will probably raise the rev limit for the Z06s when he is done putting it together. That should get you some more top speed.

The reason you can't attain top speed in 6th gear is that it's too tall. With too tall of a gear the trans does not allow the engine to make power in the proper RPM. I think I explained this right!

Jim, as a fellow Z06 owner and Raleigh citizen who drives 540 every day, I can appreciate this car and this story.

HOWEVER, I also have a wife and three children who ALSO drive on 540. My family means everything to me, and to be perfectly frank, your post gave me the chills. The thought of someone driving at those speeds, potentially near my kids, makes my heart pang, literally.

Do the Right Thing and explore the joy of your car ON THE TRACK. I spent a weekend in Savannah at Roebling, and will be going to VIR in March. It is a blast, and more importantly, THE RISKS ARE UNDERSTOOD BY EVERYONE AND SAFETY IS PRIORITY ONE.

So, please -- this isn't meant as a flame. But there are enough dangers lurking out there for our innocent family members and we don't need to add more.

Thanks for understanding. I'd love to meet up -- we should grab a lunch sometime!

Regards,
David

And just to be clear, I don't mean to be preaching... I've done stupid stuff myself I'm not proud of.

But having kids has really changed my perspective. I don't mean to be a kill-joy or sound like a geek, but I just think there's a way to have your cake and eat it to with a fast car. That's what car clubs and tracks are for.

Again, hope I didn't offend anyone.

I have to agree with JLA here... although I still hate the size of his SIG! (And I have a T1) But David (RedZ06)... you have greater things to worry about then JLA striking your kids... odds are greater that your kids will do drugs... get in a 'typical' car accident... etc...

Sorry.. but it always chaps my hide when people start criticizing those who drive fast on the streets (not that I condone it)... but find some green peace tree.. .or some other cause to defend... this gets old... Do some crash surveys... Speeders, and Reckless driving are far from the top 10 in causing accidents... go after the Drunks, or the stupid people not watching the road! Not someone in the middle of nowhere running the car hard!

I did 171 or 172 the other night... Headlights on... and then decided to prove the 6th gear theory... sure enough... she slowed! It would take atleast a 4.10 rear to do it... and usually you would be better off going with a taller gear, or tire for a top speed... 5th is geared well... it will take a bunch of gear added to 6th to make more MPH... But if you did something like an Auto Matic Optioned Rearend, or some monster tall 19 or 20" tire... that may accomplish the same thing!
Peace
