Hi new member, long time lurker. I been searching for a Z06 for 4 mnths. I have my heart set on low milage 02-04 QS with black int., either bone stock or light mods. I have contemplated a few cars to date but my biggest problem is distance to travel. I just emailed a dealer with an 02 and got a reply that the car was a GM buy back due to an engine noise. Car is said to still be warranteed. My question for all you great vette experts is if I should steer clear of this car. Is it a lemon? The vin for the car is 1G1YY12S725125463 if anyone has carfax available. They are asking 35k for it with 6.5k miles.

PS. The reason I was so excited about this 1 is the low miles and the fact that it would be a drivable distance for me to pick up the car.

I'm up in Montreal, Canada

Lets see a 2002 Z06 with 6,500 miles for 35G's that's a buyback.

If the car was a absolute cheery with a clean service record the car would only be worth 32 to 33G's tops. That dealer got some nerve. That car will still be sitting there when the C7's come out at that price. IMO the General only buys back a car as a last ditch effort. That car is worth maybe 28G's tops. At least the Dealer is following the law and disclosing the fact that it's a buyback. Whatever Z06 you decide on may sure you buy one that has some warranty left on it. Most 2002's are about time out. :z:

At 35K that isn't even a good deal. I picked mine up last November for an even 30 with 10K miles. I know I got real lucky, but I have seen them regularly for around 32K. I bought mine from a dealer, but I know the previous owner real well. A problem you will run into is timing, this is probably the worst time of the year to buy a sports car if you are looking for a deal. Hope you are the exception.

"Carfax" confirms what the dealer told you. It is a lemon! If it were me I'd stay away :NoNo:

Stay away...

I just paid 35 G's for 02 with about 11000 miles from a dealer. Cherry condition, no issues. I think you can do a lot better than this deal if you just wait a little or get them to come down in price about 2-3 G's.....

Buy Backs are Lemons most of the time. GM will purchase them back before they are labeled a lemon so they are able to resell them at a better price than a Lemon... I know this from expericence. I had an 01' coupe go thru a GM Buy Back...... Stay away...... GM wouldn't have purchased the car back unless there was a problem.......

yank on the handbrake

Yeah I'm definitely gonna yank on the handbrake on this one. Thanks for all the replies. I know we in prime time market for sports cars but believe it or not, I started searching in December. I found a bunch of Z06s I'd buy in a snap if they were just a little closer to me. I'm gonna keep searching for a silver on black. I prefer stock or light mods because she's gonna have to pass inspection when she gets here. I'll continue searching the forums and the auto traders. I'll keep you all posted!!

Thanks again!

They are all as close as a plane trip. I would spend $200-$400 in airfair to save a 2K+ and buy a nicer car.

For instance: I went to Vegas last week and on my way back I had a 4 hour layover in Houston, so I rented a car and went to check out MTI. All I can say is that just this one little stop saved me a bundle of money.

If you have time, the right car will be right around the corner.
