Need help pinning down a trunk-area CREAK...

1469 Views 7 Replies 5 Participants Last post by  AmishVette
Hey all,

Strange thing.. Went for a couple weeks (since new) with no creaks or squeaks ot anything from the Z. Then, out of nowhere, I've gotten a "creak" out of the trunk area somewhere.

Now, I know it's not easy to pinpoint something like a SOUND in MY CAR in WRITING, but... Sometimes the culprits of these things can be common between cars. Also, I'm usually pretty good at locating noises if I can LOOK AT the general area while it's making noise -- but haven't been able to turn my head completely around when I hear it (not such a good idea while driving). I think it's coming from the driver side of the trunk area, and back toward the rear of the car...

Again, it's a "creaking" (as opposed to a "squeak" or "rattle"), and only ocurrs over some bumps (USUALLY when the bump is under only one side of the rear tires (as opposed to both tires bumping up over a speed bump or something)). Sounds like perhaps plastic & plastic or plastic and metal is flexing against eachother and creaking. It's NOT a constant vibrating squeak.

Any IDEAS folks? I'm thinking that I may be able to pinpoint it if I am a passenger in the car -- but no one else has driven the car yet. /phpBB/images/smiles/icon_wink.gif

ANY ideas would be helpful! Sorry for the nebulous topic!

Kirk,

From your description, I had what may be the same sound you are hearing in the back or trunk area. I noticed the sound within a week of taking delivery.

My back glass ( rear window ) was not seated properly and would "creek" going over bumps or fairly rough road conditions. Pushing and pulling on the glass when stationary was no indicator. My dealer service tech. rode with me down a rough road in the back ( small guy ) and could hear it.

The dealer had the GM area glass specialist ( not part of the dealership ) reseat the glass. I have had no problem since it was fixed.

Hope this helps. /phpBB/images/smiles/icon_smile.gif

Hmmm.. Never even considered that it could be the window... Seemed like it was further behind me, but perhaps not. Thanks!

Now, what exactly did "re-seating" the glass entail? Did they have to take out the back window and install new molding?

Man, this forum is great! /phpBB/images/smiles/icon_biggrin.gif

Kirk,

Yes they take out the window and use all new molding. They tape the outside to make sure the window does'nt come loose - you leave the tape on for 48 hours.

To repeat - the guy who did the job is a GM glass installation pro - he only installs glass. If glass is the problem - make sure a "pro" does it with new molding. The molding had to be ordered and took about 3 days to get it to the dealer for installation. Good Luck!
I don't know if you have ruled it out or not, but if you haven't, take the tire kit out of the car. That's an easy thing to try first and just may be the cause. It is plastic and could move around during small bumps. Just a thought. Many times the simplest things are the problems. Typically everyone over thinks the troubleshooting. I haven't heard any strange sounds out of the back in the 7+ months I have had mine, mostly a lot of titanium vroom.

Dear Amishvette,

My New Z now as well is making this annoying noise behind the driver seat. Could you please give me the name and number of the dealer you used so when I go to mine they can just call them for some info on the problem? Also could you give me the name of the service person who handled your problem.
Thanks,
Johan
