Need some input from those who have LOWERED their Z's...

Hey all,

Hoping to lower the Z soon (right, Carl? /phpBB/images/smiles/icon_wink.gif). I was just looking for some input from you all prior to doing the lowering.

I have some questions:
- How long did the process take?
- How much drop did you get, front and rear? (I'm talking about the unscrew-the-bolts method, NOT cutting bushings.)
- What was the change in ride comfort? Much harsher? Not much harsher? More firm & better? No difference?
- How does the handling feel?

Thanks a million, folks!

Process takes about 1/2 hour if you have a hoist. You will probably drop about an inch rear and 3/4 of an inch front. Make sure at least 2 threads show above the nut in the rear for safety. I didn't notice a ride difference and any handling gain will be subtle. Looks bitch'n and it's free.
Thanks for the reply! No ride difference, huh? That's good to know...

I agree that it DOES look great -- that's really why I want to get 'er hunkered down a bit!

Anyone else have more/something different to add?

Thanks,

-Kirk
Same as above, but I had a shop do it and it took 15 minutes. did not even take off the wheels. You do need to understand that car washes are now out of the question and the front airdam is going to scrape a lot.

Bob
Yeah,

It scrapes a lot more.

I noticed a difference in ride quality when I lowered mine. I also didn't like the fact that the rear was lower than the front. Looked a bit funny. I've since raised the rear back up and kept the front down. The ride quality has returned as well as a better look as the front is now lower than the back. I also have a little less scraping than when the whole car was lowered.
SS -- I'm glad you mentioned the front/rear thing. I wondered out this, since the rear tires are larger (and will fill up the rear wheel well prior to the fronts). I, too, don't want a situation where it looks like the rear is squatty, but where the front looks like it's riding high (in comparison).

...But this leads me to another question: How long should it take the car to "settle" into it's new ride height? I had wanted to have the car aligned right after lowering, but not if it take a week or so to settle as low as it's going to settle.

Kirk, that is an ugly pix of your car, who took it. /phpBB/images/smiles/icon_razz.gif I will shoot another one when the sun is out and the bugs are picked off your cars nose. /phpBB/images/smiles/icon_eek.gif

I didn't have mine aligned and I'm not showing any unusual tire wear after 2000 miles.
Mine lowered about 3/4" all around. My buddy Black Magic lowered it for me, took about an hour.
I was dropped about 1 in. I can not compare ride/handeling because I also upgraded the shocks and swaybars. I can say that the ride is just a little rougher but she corners like she is on tracks. /phpBB/images/smiles/icon_biggrin.gif /phpBB/images/smiles/icon_biggrin.gif /phpBB/images/smiles/icon_biggrin.gif

I remember before I got my Z06, everybody was saying that the ride is a lot rougher than the normal C5's. When I finally got the thing, I realized it was pretty darn smooth, a lot more so than my Firebird anyway. So I think the whole ride quality thing is relative, nice thing about lowering the car is it can be easily reversed.
Thanks for the replies!

Now, if I could only get the guy who's going to help me lower the car (incidentally, the same guy who took that crappy sig picture of mine /phpBB/images/smiles/icon_wink.gif) to sort his social calendar out enough to fit the lowering in, I'll be in business! /phpBB/images/smiles/icon_biggrin.gif

(Carl, you did a darn good job getting those bugs off the nose before the pic -- I'm just glad that the resolution is bad enough that you can't see the bug that was still on the side mirror!)
