Has anyone had problems with the shifter? I sometimes think I am in 1st at a light only to discover when the light changes and I try to go, I am really between gears; reapply the clutch - re-shift and go. The same thing has happened in reverse.
The other day when giving it "some" gas in 2nd gear it seemed to "pop out" and I was somewhere between 3rd and neutral.
Tech services at GM said that there have been some problems with the shift boot getting in the way. I am new to your forum and also new to Z06 ownership. Any help would be appreciated.

Hi there,
The first course of action in any shifting problem is a shifter adjustment. Then you proceed from there.
Have your dealer adjust the shifter, and then retest the vehicle. Also, I would check to see if a little more effort on the shift lever makes the gears engage.
I have found a few shifters that have been loose from the shipping truck.
Besttoyou, and please keep us posted, c4c5

ZZERO6,

Welcome to the Forum,

Both my Z06 and my 98 coupe exhibited your symptoms in the first couple thousand miles I drove them. I found I could minimize the occurrence by firmly pushing the shift lever into gear and making sure it was all the way into the gate-stop. When I did so, it never popped out of gear when load was applied with the clutch. Once the gates were broken in a little the problem went away without any adjustment by the dealer.

I have no experience with the shifter problem, so can't offer advice, but want to welcome you to the forum!

Welcome to the forum!! /phpBB/images/smiles/icon_cool.gif

I experienced the same problem a couple of times with the stock shifter. Throw the stock shifter in the trash. It's junk!! The problem went away as soon as a switched to a Ripper. There are other good aftermarket shifters out there too.

Sherylann still has the stock shifter in her Z, and when I drive her car, its hard to tell what gear I am in. /phpBB/images/smiles/icon_frown.gif

ZZERO6..Welcome to the forum.

I have about 900 miles on my Z, have a Ripper and also have the same problem. I think its in first until I let out the clutch and hear the throwout spinning. I'm getting into the habit of pushing it into first several times while waiting at lights. It's even "popped" out a couple of times when releasing the clutch. Anoyying to deal with and I will take it to dealer if it continues. By the way, it shifts positively into all other gears...except I have missed 6th on occaision and caught 4th instead. Getting old!

Welcome to the Forum!!!!!! As said the stock shifter is junk, if you replace it you will see what we are talking about. Kirban or B&M Ripper are two good choices for replacment. /phpBB/images/smiles/icon_smile.gif

I would have to agree on the Ripper but I DETEST the gear noise coming up through the shaft....

I don't want to replace the stock knob, I just want the noise to go away....I have gotten used to it and hardly notice anymore but when a passenger gets in, they think something is wrong...

I thought about filling the cavity with silicone, has anyone else tried this?

Annoying...

There is a problem with this transmission. Mine is not going into reverse all the way, and it pops itself out of reverse. It also will not let me shift into 5th from 4th at 4,500 rpm's or higher, just has a terrible loud grinding noise. Would not shift into 6th either, just like it was hitting a brick wall on the shift, but at least it didn't grind. Once the rpm's dropped off it let me shift into 5th.

Hi there, Zeus,
As for your issue, your syncronizer, and blocker ring will not let that downshift happen based on design, and your RPM.
As for the reverse, I would have that checked, but the downshift is a normal condition.
Best to you, c4c5

About everyone I know that has a MN6 trannie in a C5 has had some type of shifting issue, including my '99.

  • 1. Get rid of that dang cheapo shifter, the
preload sucks. I went with a Kerban and though it takes more force to make the shift
it does get better as it breaks in.
IMHO, maintain using the stock handle, it is angled right for a proper shift and forget those metal ones, they do get hot to touch.

    2. I had some shifting problems to find the clutch fluid was low and wasted, to much heat I guess so change it more often then we dod for a C4.

    3. Shifting got much better when I switched to Mobil I's ATF sync fluid. A bit more money but will not foam and puke out vent hole as easy as stock fluid does and it does meet G.M specs to keep your warranty valid.

    4. With the design issues related to rear drivetain heat buildup, using a good fluid will allow better shifts between fluid changes since the Mobil fluid works better under heat stress.

I went with a trannie cooler and that also helps out a bit.

I think one shifter rod that travels X amount of feet within the drivetube, connected to a small u-joint fitting was not the best design for us hardcore owners who are married to the rev limiter /phpBB/images/smiles/icon_smile.gif

After having mine about 6 months the ONLY thing I have noticed strange is it has jumped out of 1st gear about 3 times now when taking off normal from a redlight. It would move forware just a foot or two then jump into nuetral. Trying to kinda hold it in 1st gear now until I am ready to shift. Never had this happen even once to me the four years I had my LT4. Will continue to watch it until I either get a Kirban or new car.

I had it happen to me last night. I thought I was in, but it did not feel just right. Pulled it back out and put it back in and worked fine then, Whew. I was glad I checked it!

My shifter was very "Stiff" when new. I had to make very deliberate moves to get into gears. At 3,500 miles the thing loosened up and feels more positive.

Still planning another shifter though.

I don't remember having this problem on the stock shifter. It happened to me a few times after I installed the Kirban...boy.. it sounded awful when that happened. Sounded like one of the tooth might of got broken from the gear. I first thought that it might be the setting of the shift stop. I was going to take the console apart again to adjust the shift stop until I read this post. I guess it's not the shift stop because people having this problem on the stock too.

I just make sure to jam it into first everytime now. It haven't happen to me anymore eversince I start doing that. I don't know, maybe the gate had broken in.

I just can't help to point out that the Kirban rocks. It just getting better and better everyday. Easy to shift, very precise, shorter throw, and never miss a gear again.....

I'm like Zeusthor. I have 5500 miles on my 01 MY and I have to really cram reverse to make sure it is engaged fully. It doesn't pop out it just makes that pleasant grinding noise until I get the clutch back in. Knowing it can do this makes me really sensitive to the issue and it therefore happens less and less.
