I am thinking ahead to the first 500 miles on my new ZO6 and plan to change the engine oil to the same Mobil 1 that it came with. What about the Transmission and Differential oils? When would be a good time to change them out to some Redline oils I have on hand?

Bob,

I've been hearing great things about Red Line, but have never tried it myself. My Buddy Black Magic is going to do the change in his C5. I'll report back to you on his impressions.

Zee,
I believe that was resolved. It seemed to apply to a specific transmission that was used in the Supra. This Trans. is not the same type in use in the C5 however, and the Redline manuf. says it is OK. Many are using Redline. My question is more from a timing point. When would be a good time to change oils to get rid of the junk from the breakin period just as in the engine.

Bob, Everyone,
I just joined this Forum and this was going to be my first question. Without any definitive answers here, perhaps the timing is a personal decision. At first, I was going to have engine, trans oils changed to Red Line right at delivery! My break-in miles are up to 238 now. Should I change at 500? Think I'll wait until before upcoming track events. First one is end of April, a local driving school at Pocono. Is it best to change all three oils? engine, trans, differential?

You can ask 50 different people and get 50 different answers and variations. I bet you know the answer, after attending Bragg-Smith and all. I changed oil only at 1000 miles. I do not plan on changing the other until 5K or so, if then. Oil filter will be changed at about 4-5K, and oil changed again in about 8K. I used to change every 3K, but with todays synthetic oil and better filters than in the past, think its not needed. Tho you will get all kinds of answers. Getting antsey with all that snow? :)

I have decided to change engine oil/filter at 500 miles using Mobil 1. Will change again at 1000 miles to Redline and every 5k after that. I will change the Trans to Redline D4 ATF and the diff. to Redline 75W-90 both at 1000 miles.

I was reading in a thread on the CF that there is a noticable improvement in shifting quailty with the redline synthetic (D4ATF).

I know 3 quarts seems way high. It seems to suck oil down whenever I open it up. I haven't noticed any leaks or seepage on the engine. I know there have been posts on the forums regarding this issue. At this point I am watching and keeping records of oil added so if I have problems later and have to take it in, I have my bases covered.

Since it is not happening with all Z06... I woud be interested to know if there is a problem with a specific group or a group made within a specific time frame.

I changed all my oils at about 500 miles and switched to Red Line, engine, rear and trans. The Red Line D4 ATF made the shifting much better after about 100 miles of use, it's been over a year and everything is still working the same. I have put Red Line fluids in all 5 Vettes that I have owned. I believe that Red Line or Amsoil are your 2 best choices due to the bases that their oils are made from.

MiZo6, Yesterday I was perusing through my 2001 service manuals and came across an Oil Specification that said abnormal oil consumption is defined as using 1 quart or > per 1500 miles. You may want to get that checked out.

I wouldn't go so far to say that it is not happening with all Z06's. I think that all the Z06's that are being driven hard are experiencing higher than normal oil usage. I know mine is.

Many people have Z06's as daily drivers and no matter how hard they drive it on the weekend, it doesn't compare with the mileage and use of someone who ONLY drives it hard.
