I made the call to my dealer this morning to report my oil consumption problem that I have been tolerating for the past year and hoping would improve. However at 10k and consumption suddenly increasing to 700 miles per qt rather than a pretty steady 1000 per qt as it has been for the past 5k, I have lost all hope and now realize it will only get worse in the future.

I talked to the same advisor who helped me get the faulty brake vacuum booster replaced 13 months ago when so many vettes were suffering from the same out of tolerance boosters. He was aware of the '01 LS6 oil consumption problems and his dealership had already done two or three ring updates and had one currently in the shop. ( I did not have to educate him to the existance of the problem and its probable solution) The updated rings only became available at his dealership last November so they did not have enough driving time on the rering jobs to know how successful. I mentioned to him that GM tried to blame drivers for the problem. He replied that GM was no longer taking the view that the problem was due to driving habits. He said I could do my own oil change and but be sure that it was full when I bring it in to verify and document the consumption test start.

I love my car :D but I have to allow my car to be pulled apart because this has to be fixed. I urge everyone with oil consumptions at a quart per 1500 miles or less to bite the bullet and get it fixed so the rest of the car world will no longer be able to say that the '01 Z06s are worth less due to an image of being oil burners.

C4C5Specialist posted several days ago that a successful re-ring job would be judged in his opinion to be 3000 miles or more per quart. Two years ago I would have thought that to be excessive for a new engine. However at this point knowing what I now know, I will be overjoyed to reach that consumption level. I know others may disagree but some high performance engines over the vast decades have had reputations for being oil burners. Others can cite high perf engines that did not use any oil. Just my 02 cents.

oil consumption

I am sorry that others are going thru this hassle. I have posted previously about my problem with the 01 z06...and I am sorry to report that it is only getting worse....I now have 3800 miles on the car, and GM has put me on a oil consumption recording sheet, so every time I have to top up, I have to stand in the "Minute Lube" line at the dealership, which actually takes 90 minutes, just to have the service guy put in a quart or two, witness on the paper, and off I go to burn more.

I am using a quart of oil for every tank of gas, with city driving, mainly.

What can I/we do..we got screwed again by the General and do I need this aggravation for paying 5 grand over list of 50 grand, to have an oil burner....I think not!:guiness: :guiness: (oil guzzler)
