Personally I have not experienced this type oil consumption. I think the dip-stick is rather hard to get a good reading and not sure if I was down that much. I added less than a half a quart at about 1200 miles and had the oil changed at 3000. I have not had to add any since. I have 4200 miles and have owned the car since the first week of September. I do drive it frequently and get into it when ever I get a chance. I check my oil at every gas fill-up since I have heard others stating oil use. I don't think anyone has identified any particular problem or cause. The best thing to do is check it at every fill-up. Good luck!

My car seems to be going through a lot of oil. I changed it at 1500 miles. I then had to add a quart 1700 miles later and again 1200 miles after that. I don't race it or drive ir particularly hard. Anybody else experience this?
A few people have had oil problems. I would consider this to be a problem, yet GM does not so they say.
Yours does seem to be a little more than average. I am not used to checking my oil every 500 miles. and to add a quart every 1000 miles to me sounds VERY out of hand.

I just mentioned that I was experiencing the same thing in another thread regarding oil changes. I added a quart at 903 miles another at about 1500 miles and just topped it off again at 1900 miles. It seems to stay full until I open it up and run it a bit. I am not that hard on the car and most of my driving is to/from work.
At this point I am watching it and recording my oil use. I'm going to take it to the dealer for my next oil change and mention this to them and have them look over everything.
Here are the links to the threads on Pit Road concerning oil consumption.
Argh! I've had my car "fixed" twice by the dealer for excessive oil consumption. Just today, however, I got "Low Oil Level" warnings again. I have only 6k miles on the dial.

This is is a really irritating problem.

This is precisely what I'm trying to avoid. I have 4.5 k on th dial and have gotten the warning twice already. I know going to the dealer will be an excerise in futility.

Nmorse, on page 6-18, volume 2 of the 2001 service manual, it describes excessive oil consumption like this "Excessive oil consumption (not due to leaks) is the use of 0.95 liters (1.0qt) or more of engine oil within 2414 kilometers (1500 miles)" and then it goes on to explain some of the causes of the excessive oil consumption. "external leaks..improper oil viscosity...continous high speeed driving and or severe usage (
)...and a slew of other things. I hope this helps.

First time, they just replaced the oil and said it was 1.5 qts low (I had already added a quart!).
Second time, they replaced the PCV valve, and maybe the hose (I can't recall). Said there was some oil in the hose. Not sure how that accounts for 1-2 quarts, but...
This time will be the last. I am researching lemon laws (sorry guys). I don't have the time to bring my car in every 6-8 weeks for more oil.

Thanks. I'm hoping it won't come to this, but I'm preparing for it. This will be the 3rd repair in fewer than 6k miles. In NC, four unsuccessful repairs constitutes a lemon.
I am hopeful, but realistic. From others' stories it sounds like there may be a design defect, or at least a manufacturing defect, resulting in unacceptable oil consumption in some LS6's. Thoughts?
If anyone has a better suggestion, I'm all ears. I would be much happier if the car could be fixed once and for all and I could enjoy it!
Thanks for the info guys. It seems I'm real close to excessive consumption. My car spends most of its time going to and from work. I don't race it or abuse it. It's my everyday car. I can't afford to. The only oil that has ever gone in it is 5-30 Mobil One. The filter is a Delco Ultragard. There is no evidence of leaks. Hope it clears up. I'd hate to have to subject it to the dealer.
