Oil...should have taken hcvone's advice!

Carl told me to wait and not take my 8 months on order car, as it so close to the 02 model, which should have the oil consumption problem addressed. I took delivery and I am using oil, immediately.

CMD says my car needs rings But they are not available as yet. WTF? Maybe in a month. I am PO'd. Re-ringing the engine at 900 miles would seriously and substantially devalue my car IMO.

A replacemnt engine with newstyle rings doesn't please me either...collectible car no more with non matching numbers.

I told customer service I want a new car.

Rant Over

JJ, well that sucks, get the car fixed when the rings are available and order a 02', you should make out ok.
Both of my Zs have slowed way down on using oil.

As far as the rings being availabe, my dealer told me that they were available last month and that they had already replaced a couple of sets. /phpBB/images/smiles/icon_confused.gif

I was told that an even newer design ring will be available in a month or so.

My feelings are that the car was defective from the git go and should be bought back. It's not that it deveoped an oil consumption problem and warranty will cover it. It was delivered with the well defined problem. It seems to me that CMD knew or should have known that Z06's use oil to some degree or another and did nothing but wait for complaints should they come.

Dirty pool!

I am not going down easy. /phpBB/images/smiles/icon_frown.gif /phpBB/images/smiles/icon_mad.gif
I bought a new car. I want a new car. I don't want a flat rate tech's idea of an overhaul.

Apologies to our member in Conn. who is a tech who seems to care and be knowledable

NO NUMBERS ON BLOCK OR TRANS--NOT A ISSUE,ALL THAT MATTERS IS ITS A 243 CASTING.
Mine does not use oil--but if it did, some people would be getting phone calls to their homes!!!!!

HI there,
I understand completely, and I would be upset also, but please consider this.
LS6 will possibly not fully break in for 5000 miles. Now, if this is true, you have a ways to go.
From my professional experience, I have had 7 ZO6 in my shop for this issue, and as of this writing, all have slowed to 1 quart in 3000 miles.
This is considered normal, given the engine design characteristics, and the like.
I would ask that you think about this before having the vehicle opened up. I would wait until you hit 5000, and then proceed with the oil consumption test, and then proceed.
If I can be of further assistance, please dont hesitate to call on me, best for a fast resolution to your issue, c4c5
C4C5specialist

I put gas and oil in at the same time./phpBB/images/smiles/icon_mad.gif.
This is far outside of break in consumption parameters. Do you really think it will go from 2 quarts in 430 miles(dealer oil change) and another two at 968 miles(at the dealer) to 1 quart in 3000 after a 5000 mile break in?

This car is going back...I hate being taken advantage by CMD. They knew of the potential consumption and released this car, almost a year into production. 7 burners at your dealership alone? Shame on CMD as it shows they give a rat's arse about the consuming public.

I am pissed...does it show?;);)

HI again Jesse,
The reasons for this are many, however, these c5 owners have traveled a long way for me to confirm this issue.
1 from Pittsburg, Bangor, 2 from NYC, 1 from Providence, and 2 from the Ct state.
What I am saying, is that this is possible, and that your issue may clear up. Please understand that GM figures that ZO6 is more likely to consume based on issues within the engine. And the fact that LS6 is usually driven harder. This design is unlike any other small block in history, and with that, come with its own share of particular quirks.
I have seen almost no issues with anything else on the ZO6, and I hope that you can understand my point of view, take care, and let me know how it goes, c4c5
JJ, just start the paper trail and keep bitching, I would not rest until I had a new car as well, that is why I waited and told you my concerns. /phpBB/images/smiles/icon_smile.gif

I just got word from Mirak Chevrolet in Arlington Massachusetts
Tech assistance and a field engineer both agree that the rings are the problem in all Z06’s that consume oil when revved over 3,000 rpm. Oh My God…over 3000!
The correct new-style redesigned rings are not available.
CMD in effect has admitted to selling me a know problem car and plans to do nothing about it, today.
But in the future, when they get around to it, they will install new oil rings of a new design. What Mothers!
They knew it and they released it hoping I would store it or drive it gently. In the event that I drive the car in the way it was intended they will repair it…sometime.

Anybody got any ideas other than the legal venue?
JJ,

I have a feeling a friend to the forum is following this and you will get results soon. /phpBB/images/smiles/icon_smile.gif Good luck, Bro!!

But JJ you did follow my advise, your still single. /phpBB/images/smiles/icon_biggrin.gif I do not have much longer to follow my own advise it seems. /phpBB/images/smiles/icon_frown.gif

Interesting string...all 2001 have the oil consumption problem to some degree or another. It has been corrected for 2002. Repair parts are unavailable (still not an option for me). Why is CMD balking at taking this POS back?
How can they take the postion that they knew it had a defect when they sold it, they want to repair it, and the parts are unavailable?
I have a big dent in my bank account, and an undrivable unfixable car.

Really pissed. CMD is abusing it's power on an individual. I refuse to go away. I refuse to lie down.

Massachusetts General Laws 93A allows triple damages. I have expressed this to the dealer, with whom I have NO problem, but they are the ones that will be sued.

Thanks for the email.

I share your frustration. I won't be going the re-ring path either. With that said...

I don't believe a law suit is necessary to get the remediation you deserve. Several members of this and the other forum have gone the buy-back route. One guy said the buy-back took three weeks to complete, once his oil consumption issue was documented. CMD apparently is doing the right thing when faced with the proper documentation and a resolute owner.

How? I realize you state that it in your opinion this will devalue, but I'm wondering what you base it on?

I'm sorry to hear you are having a concern with your new vehicle. Has the dealer diagnosed it yet? Checked for leaks? PCV operation? Oil consumption test?

AFAIK a repair would hinge on a diagnosis. A tech can have an opinion on what "might" be going on, but diagnostics really are needed to determine the failure, if one is present, the cause of the failure, defects in material or workmanship, then the repair.

I wish you the best of luck with resolving this, and I also hope you give GM the opportunity to determine if this is a situation covered under their obligations under the new vehicle warranty.

How?

Tainted warrantee history..immediate major problem

Has the dealer diagnosed it yet? Checked for leaks? PCV operation? Oil consumption test?

Yes

Thank you

JJ, Sorry to hear of your displeasure. I was hopeing to see you at O'wens on fri. Mine never used as much as yours, 2 1/2-3 qrt the first 3000mi. Then 1 1/2 qrt the next. It has not used any the last 1500mi and you know it goes a bit beyond 3000rpm. I would sugest driveing the car and enjoying it (oil aside) untill there is a resolution. Hopefully we will get together. I would like to feel the car to see if it's also affecting performance. CMD warned this car was for extrem enthusiasts, (you are)Now if your realy pissed tell them you would be ameanable to John Lingenfelter doing the rings. Now that would open some very interesting posibilitys. Hope what ever you are made to feel hole. Ric
JJ, There is open testing at new england dragway tomoro (sunday) Thay open at 8 and start time trials at 9 and run all day to 5. I will be there as will Greg (TTZO6). It might seat the rings sooner if the other eforts dont pan out,and I promes you will have a blast. Let me know. Ric

I am glad you one of the chosen few or at least have accepted minimal use of oil and from your previous posts you never used the amounts I have immediately. Here's my post to the newsgroup alt autos corvette and yes I am trying to get someone at CMD to own up!:

*******************************************
Yes, all 01 are using oil to some degree or another....mine -very late
production and using extraordinary amounts. CMD promises to replace the oil
rings when they become available in a month or so. I am PO'd that CMD would
release a vehicle with a known defect. I have asked for a buy back or a
trade assistance (to an 02 model without the oil issue). My feeling is that
an engine 'opened up' when new will seriously and substantially reduce it's
market value.
