Frank: Thanks for the reply. Is a "bent fork" possible when there has been no hard missed shift?

I have something very similar happening, but with 4th, and only when it's cold. Car warms up, it's fine.

Doubt it.
On the way home tonight I noticed that 2nd gear was not smoothly engaging--especially on downshifts. I could hear a light grinding sound as I backed off. When it persisted I skipped second gear on the way home and will take the car in to the dealer tomorrow.

I always make light and positive shifts, and never speed-or power-shift, and have not done drag-strip starts.

I think it may be a bad second gear syncro. Has anyone experienced this problem?

Does anyone else have any ideas?

Thanks in advance!

The Dealer is slowly making progress on the 2nd gear problem. Finally had the right "tool" overnighted to open the tranny (this is a big Dealer too!).

The update is that the Second Gear Syncro is not broken or cracked, but simply "worn out." In 6400 miles!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! With no speed or power shifts and not track visits to date!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

He remarked that my rear tires were showing some wear. I explained: (1) soft compound for performance; (2) the RPO Z06 is made for performance--this is not a Camry; and (3) there has been absolutely no abuse on the car.

There are no problems with the dealer, but it does bother me a bit that a part like a tranny syncro will wear out in 6400 miles. I cannot believe GM planned this.

Also, nothing new on oil consumption yet. GM is looking into it.

Mako,

I'm sure GM will make things right for you. Seems unusual to to lose a synchro so early with little abuse.
I know my buddy Ron Marks lost his tranny after only having it a couple of days. GM took care of him and I sure Rippied is a happy camper. Best of luck...hope they get her back on her feet soon.

Frank: Thanks for the kind words! I have an '01 Tahoe Truckasauraus Rex loaner now. Man is that thing big!

The one comment on the CF about a clutch problem causing the worn out 2nd gear syncro has me a bit spooked. I want to make sure everything is solid before I have the DRM top-end package installed (which is paid for and just waiting for the cam profile to be finalized).

I will keep everyone posted as it could affect more than just my Z06.

ust got my Z back from the dealer today. It runs great again. 2nd gear syncro was replaced (worn out) as were several other parts, including the fork. I will post the parts later.

Also, new piston rings to fix the oil consumption problem are in the final stages of testing and are estimated to be available in April. I will post details later.

Thanks for the info Mako. Glad to see you up and running again.

I'm really interested in what they find on the rings..as both of my Zs are using oil.

The problem was the syncro. The fork was replaced just as a precaution.I have repaired several of these transmissions. The tool that they needed was the 5/6 driven gear removel tool.
