Problems with Z06???

1219 Views 12 Replies 8 Participants Last post by  nsxcorvette
I have a 2001 z06 with 41k miles fresh out of warranty.. I'm curious as to whether any of you have had problems with repairs, maintenance, things breaking, etc. with your z06s??? The only thing I found on the site was the oil burning problem, which mine doesn't seem to have yet. I use it as a daily drive (3 days a week) and would like to know if there anything I should look out for as I approach 50k miles?? Thanks for any help!!!

The clutch and aluminum synchronizers are the weak points. The synchronizers were upgraded to steel (actually iron) in mid 2003. :z:
Are there any ways to prevent the clutch and sycros from going? I"ve heard of a couple people jacking them up from jamming through the gears with too little clutch and too much gas... Is it just a matter of not being too hard on the clutch?
Zero problems to report! Had car close to two years, 30k miles and I drive it like I stole it.

Drive the car with some reason and respect and you will be surprised how long every will last. :ity:
I have never heard of the syncro change for mid-year 2003 models. I have an 01/03 production date on my 03 and would hate to think I have weaker syncros. Tell me more please (I think I want to know?!)

Do a search for old threads on 3-4th gear shift problems. If you have the earlier '03 model, your tranny has aluminum shift forks that tend to slightly bend at high rpm stress levels and will harm the syncros. There is a service bulletin for the dealer to install the iron shift forks and new syncros under warranty. I believe the cutoff date was Mar/April '03 when they changed to the iron shift forks, so you may need the upgrade. Mine gets stuck in 3rd on occasion and I am able to get it back to neutral, but some cars have to be hauled in on a flatbed to be repaired. Mine goes in later this year for the upgrade. FYI.

What's your Vin Number? :z:
I'm on my second passenger side window motor replacement. Might have gone up and down 20 times total between replacements. Apparently the same $290 crappy assembly as used in other notorious GM machines.
Window motors, especially (for some reason) the passenger side, and those cheesy headlight motors/gearsets - two so far. The big stuff seems bullet proof, but the little things can be annoying.
