The pups are on California 99s and all 00s and 01s only to hasten cat light-off so the cars can meet LEV.

You can remove the pups and not have problems with codes. The OBD2 system cannot sense the lack of pups only the lack of all catylitic converters.

California owners becareful about removing the pups as your car may not pass the visual part of the smog check.

For those of you who are running long tubes, therefore you have removed the "pups" - are you still able to pass emissions?? The emissions test I am referring to is: car on a dyno with tailpipe emission tested at different RPMs.

Thanks...

To Hib H. is there much gain to be had by removing the pups? Just curious thanks DB

On 99s and 00s there's 5hp.
On 01s I'm not sure what the gain would be, if any.

On 99s and 00s there's a max. of 5hp.
On 01s I'm not sure what the gain would be, if any.

As for a pupless car passing an I/M240 style emissions test (ie: on a low-speed dyno): as long as the under-floor cats are still there and the downstream O2Ses are left in place, you'll have no trouble passing the tailpipe emissions test. Now, in a state that also has the "visual inspection" part of the test, as we do here in the People's Republik of Kalifornia, a pupless car may flunk the test. Further, removal of the pup cats is evidence of tampering. Depending on the state, that may or may not be a problem.
