Road Atlanta Z06 Driver Education Weekend PULLING PLUG!!!

1669 Views 16 Replies 8 Participants Last post by  Felkebg
I have been a part of many driver education weekend sponsored events at the Road Atlanta course for my Ferrari club and later with the Porche club in my 300 Z TT and NSX. I either want to identify some similar Corvette events around the country or see if we can get enough interest going on the forum in doing a primarily Z06 event at the Road Atlanta course.

If I hear enough interest I am willing to do a lot of the legwork in setting it all up. If you have not done this it is a blast but be prepared to spend some money on tires, brake pads, and fluids.

We will need a lot of logistics mulled over to pull this off but how does it sound? Who is willing to work with me on it if we get the interest?

Only open dates are June 4th and July 25th this year!

I am always willing (as an instructor, that is). I love Rd Atlanta, and an all-Corvette deal would be great. I also know all of the tricks to avoid getting chips and dings on the track.

I'm up for something like this with a couple of caveats.

1 being such an event would only interest me if done at a track with ample run-off. Watkins Glen is my idea of a not good idea for instance. The further the armco is the less opportunity for an serious injury befalling a participant or totalled car.

These thing are more fun if the guardrails aren't an issue. If it was a race car only thing...sure run it wherever.

I thought RA was being regraded... that been done already?

I live about 100 miles from Road Atlanta and have been there many times but not since they removed the "dip". I work a lot of weekends but I'd love to go if the dates work out.
I really like Rd Atlanta with the new setup, much safer, although not quite as "exciting". Plenty of runoff, and of course, you only have to drive as fast as you feel comfortable at this type of event.

Hope you guys can put this together.

Dave
I know this might be against the rules, but if there is any chance of getting enough people to do this, we might need to go to some of the other corvette forums as well, and maybe even open it up to other model Corvettes. It takes a lot of money to get Rd Atlanta.

There are cheaper, nice tracks, if Rd Atlanta can't be worked out.

If we need to get more people....lets try contacting the southeast corvette clubs first /phpBB/images/smiles/icon_smile.gif

Just an idea /phpBB/images/smiles/icon_wink.gif

I'm glad to see we are starting to get some interest. I will be looking into answers and costs, etc.

I'm interested, but Atlanta is a distance away, and it depends on when it takes place.
Excellent idea though....keep us posted.

Here is a track map:
http://roadatlanta.com/map.htm

Only open dates are June 4th and July 25th this whole year! Approximate costs are track fee ($3500 +) + insurance ($575 x 2-medical and fire) + wrecker, optional ($275) + corner workers if we don't do our own corner work. Instructor availablility is unknown area at this point. These true costs would get divided by registrants if we want it Z06 exclusive or I would ask for flat registration fees and underwrite it by opening up on other Vette forums.

Proposed Rough agenda would be

Tech inspection (early)
Novice School (am)
Track familiarity run (am)
Instructor assisted and solo heats (rest of day)
Only two passing zones, safe, safe, safe
but as full speed as you are able.

We will have to personally work our contacts from other clubs if we want to piggyback on one of their events already booked at the track. If you have never done this you should. If you have done it, 'nuff said you know.

Need a serious head count in, out, or maybe?

Ok with C5 opening to save $$ or piggyback with Porche if low interest shown?

With those two dates as the only available it's going to be difficult to gather much of a crowd.
It's a grat idea and I am really happy to see it considered. I don't think I can make it there on the dates proposed. But, I appreciate the spirit and the effort! Way to go!
It would have to be June 4 for me, but that is a Monday!
Pulling the plug on this one folks. I will let the forum know next time I get an announcement from the Porche or Ferrari clubs I used to belong to. When another club is running on this track a few of us can piggyback on their two day event.

Also smoke some Carrera and Ferrari times by our superior machines and driving before lunch for good measure..... All the best to those who responded.
