I've seen a post similar to this regarding the Halltech system. I just bought the car, and it had this mod. The problem is that the airbox cover is not sealed worth a crap, and I'm wondering if(and when) I seal it, will the surging go away? We have a C/R motorsports setup(similar to vortex etc...) on Jacki's C5, and not ONCE have felt any surging(superior design?) I absolutely love the intake sound w/ the Blackwing--it truly sounds like an old 4 barrel.
To add another 'possible' cause(?)TPIS Headers were also on the car, but it has some exhaust leaks(small) where the first owner tried his hand @ welding(NOT a good job). Would this 'non-seal' of the exhaust system also be a contributing factor to the surge???
Thanks in advance...

I'm not sure what you mean by airbox cover...but the surging also happened to me. My understanding is the computer has to re-learn the intake. I took mine for a spin, and it has been fine since. As far as a cover, the Blackwing doesn't have a cover??!!?? None on mine anyway.

I read somewhere that if you remove the MAF screen it will cause surging. You may want to check to see if that has been removed by the previous owner. /phpBB/images/smiles/icon_smile.gif

I have had the Donaldson filter on my last two Vets, and did not remove the screen....No surging here.

I installed the Blackwing before I had the Vortex system installed. Although I did not opt for the box option with the BW I do know a little about it. Take the box and BW out of your Vette. Unclamp everything and clean. Make sure you use some WD40 and reconnect. Make sure you get a TIGHT FIT [LEAKS CAUSE SURGING]. Reinstall the the box again you need a tight fit to the shroud. Also make sure you have a tight fit from the accordian to the throttle body. I removed the screen on my Z and the motor never surged. The header issue I can't help you with however I would get it checked by a pro. One of our moderators hcvone, who's advice I highly respect has recomended Tpis headers to me for my '02 EB Z and I ordered them. It's too bad the prior owner didn't pay a few $$ extra to complete the job properly. Good Luck FUBU69/LES

I'm going to dig into it a bit this weekend--we'll see what happens. Thanks for the responses.

********UPDATE**********
I blocked off the cut-out in the shroud, and for all intents & purposes--the surging went away...
I also saw that the MAF had the screen removed--no surging though w/ this mod when the cut-out was covered. I believe that the modified MAF can be discounted as the cause.

I then opened the cut-out again & took off the airbox cover because when the cover was cinched down, the tube from the filter to the MAF was not in a 'straight' line(it appeared as though the seal was not complete @ the rear of the MAF). I took the car out once more and the surging reappeared

I don't understand why this is happening, because as I stated earlier, we have a C/R motorsports unit & de-screened MAF on the '99 w/ no such drivability issues--I'm a bit baffled suggestions? thoughts?

GTB, the Z adapter/ coupler can be a pain in the ass. Although I did not use the the cold air box unit when I had the BW I did experience problems maintaining the seal at the coupler which may cause surging. You have to be real gentle. My screen is popped with my Vortex with no surging. It is the same concept. I bet ya it's the coupler. Straight & tight is a must. GOOD LUCK MATE! FUBU69/LES

Here is my experience with surging.
In late Feb. 2000 I made a bottom feeding cold air system for my Donaldson filter.
When cruising at about 55 mph in 4th gear (2500 rpms) the car had a slight surging.
At this time no one that I know of had a ram air for the Donaldson so I called Ron at
Pro Auto Tech that sells the Donaldson and asked if he would be interested in the system.
I already had an appointment for his 460 package in May.
Well I drove the car down in March and we tested the box, he was driving the car while I was
holding his Tech II and to his surprise we reached ambient temperature. He was also impressed
the way the car ran and wanted to do my 460 package then (he felt that this could be his first
400+ rwhp none stroker LS1 and it was). Well after doing the head & cam package he could not get
the car to run for crap, at the same 2500 rpms the car was not surging but bucking as though it was running
out of gas. When testing with the Tech II again he was getting readings from the MAF that were not normal.
The fix Tiffany placed a piece of cardboard between the Donaldson and the air scope in the fan shroud.
Here is a link to the box I made, sure wish it would have worked.
