The ol' "How soon can I wash my Z06" question...

1026 Views 12 Replies 12 Participants Last post by  high test
Hey folks,

The Z just got here yesterday morning! WOW! What a car! When I have second more, I'm going to do the "first impressions" post, if you all don't mind.

The question: Since my baby's only a few days old, when's the soonest I can wash it? Could there be any harm to the new paint now? Or, is that an old wives' tale? Also, any "tips" on washing (best mitt, "car wash" solution, etc.), since I'm starting out fresh here?\

Thanks, folks!

You can wash it immediately. It's already been washed if the dealer did the prep work on it. I actually washed mine at the dealer the day I picked it up.
You can probably wax it too, though some people say to wait 30 days for that.... but I don't/didn't.

I would recommend getting a wash mitten. This was recommended to me instead of using a sponge. This will help avoid getting dirt in the sponge which can then cause scratches.

I use 100% White Cotton Towels made is the USA. I get them from the FieldCrest Site for irregular towels. I use the hand and bath sizes for washing, drying and waxing. The link is below. Great deals, about a third of what you'd pay in stores.

Wal-mart sells a thick "cotton" car washing pad (large sponge size)which I have been using for all of my C5's. Make sure you use "car washing" detergent and luke warm water. I having been using a leaf blower to remove excess water out of those tight areas...side mirror frames, door handles, rear lights and rear license frame area...prior to drying. My "black" Z can get mega water spots from these areas 2 or 3 days after washing. Also, be sure to Windex clean the windows within an hour after drying...avoid those hard water spots. Wash and dry in shade only! I detail the wheels and interior the next morning. Cleaning the Z is half the fun!!

I use a cotton wash mitt, they are very soft and will not scratch. The 100% cotton made in USA towels are also a must, for full size you will pay 10-20 dollars a towel.

I use 100% cotton towels to wash and dry. Like PA_Z06 I get mine from the fieldcrest irregulars website. For the car, use only the white towels. You don't want any of the dyed towels. You could cut the borders off the towels too, as they are not cotton, and may scratch the surface. Personnally, I just fold them so that border never comes in contact with the car. Also, when you wash the towels, use only liquid clothes detergent, the powder has a greater chance of leaving small granules in the nap, and that will eventually scratch your car.

I would also suggest checking out www.zainobros.com. Zaino is one of the best producers of car care products. And, no, I am not employed by Zaino. But, having tried many brands, I have always returned to (and swear by) Zaino. They have a good section on techniques for car care as well.

Enjoy your new Z06.

Tom,

There are filters that will take out the minerals and polish the water, but not at the speed coming out of the hose. You would need to have a large tank to fill for washing only water...not very practical. Just wash and use plenty of soap(Zaino wash) and then wash that off and dry soon to avoid leaving deposits.

I'm with lazygun. Get on the Zaino bandwaggon now when the car is brand new. The initial investment in time/effort and $$$ is well worth it!!! you can get all the information at www.zainobros.com
