I'm assuming since it's at a GM service shop... this is what needs to be done to get to the motor? Wow! (or is it an hourly rate charged back to the factory? :D )

It takes 4 days, and you are paid 19.4 hours.

HI there,
YEp, engine out the bottom, disassemble, reassemble with new rings, reinstall, realign the vehicle, and road test.
Huh, make you think I have done this before???
It takes me 4 days to do this job, and GM pays the tech 19.4 hours, with the alignments.
And they wonder why they can find anyone to work on c5???
It looks like you are in very good hands there, and best of luck, c4c5

c4c5specialist,

Sorry but I do quite understand your post..
With 4 days of work and assuming 8 hours each, should you get
pay for 32 hours of labor?? I have no idea how dealership
mechanics are paid. Pay by fixed salary? Pay by hours worked?

Do you mind explain a bit?
Thanks,

Thanks for all the positive comments guys ... I posted the pics on the other forum, and got similar responses. I am calling GM today, and the local mechanic to try and figure out more info. She is scheduled to be back normal, end of next week.

Owwwwwww

My car is blk/blk so I keep looking at your pics going oh geez!

I know your mechanic probably won't go for it, but as long as its apart you might consider slipping a new crank in it. I mean it is apart and all. You've got it this far down.

I had a friend at one point who had a problem like this in his 86 convertible (the aluminum heads had problems). And when the motor came out it was magically a dealer installed 383 with new aluminum head.

But I feel your pain.

guys ... unfortunately I cannot get any aftermarket parts installed, I already tried. I have a new cartek clutch at my place, which requires a resurfaced flywheel - which they said 'no,no' to ... so I am s.o.l., there! Then I thought to myself, shit - why not just speak with the mechanic ?!... and here are his exact words:

"I will treat the car like it's my own, we did a car last week for the owner of the dealership - it is fine now", he goes onto say "you will not notice a thing, not even a spec of oil or dust anywhere"... I said to him ... "<name withheld>, please take your time - he says "I will - but I can only do what the boss (GM) tells me to" - I said, "how about a new set of pistons, he smurks and says "ok - let's call GM and find out"

I am waiting now - anyways, to make a long story short ...

She is in good care, the baby will have to be driven like new, to reseat everything again ... 500 miles. So .... we'll see!

Great pics.. Thanks a bunch for posting them!

Sure, pulling it out the bottom is a bear. But when I look at a lot of the assemblies, they don't look too bad (well engineered, etc.).

Clearly the chances of that happening if I had bought an '01 were slim, but coupled with EB, that is why I went with the '02. After these pics I will never think back and wonder if I should have gotten the '01 at a better deal.

Rob, good luck with the redo. Be gentle on the breakin.
We are all pullin for you.

Your mechanic should NOT have replaced ALL the rings.....or the pistons......
The second Ring is the only one to be changed......(oil control), and one other ,can't remember the one.......and they are to be peplced into the EXACT same jug they came out of.......
So you would not have to go through the entire RE break in procedures again..........
This is acording to the tech memo sent out to the dealers,,......per [email protected] GM.........
I can't imagine why the entire engine came out for this job........
They ( unless there is a reason I know not why)........
They could have replaced the rings from the bottom, and required MUCH less labor, and dismantling of your vehicle........
That is, like I said, unless on the Vette............you HAVE to remove the engine.........

Sorry to hear about the Z. Sounds like you ahve a good mechanic working on it though and thats what matters. I had the motor replaced in mine (long block) and was very satisfied with the work. Car runs stronger now than it ever did and the general stepped up and offered me a 5YR/75000 mile extended warranty. Try calling the GM customer service number and see what you can get. I pushed hard for a buy back, no luck as of yet but still trying.
