Underdrive Pulley Advice

2544 Views 14 Replies 12 Participants Last post by  BAD 06
As some of you know my Z is getting a heads & cam upgrade the question is: should I get the underdrive pulley also? They claim around 5-10 rwhp for an additional $500.
Any help with this decision is appreciated!

These will as you know slow down your accessories. If your running any accessories that pull a lot of electrical current. Your alternator may not be able to keep up. Just my 2 cents.

That's a lot of $$ for 5-10 hp

I ran the under drive pullies on my Z28 and know other F bodies that ran them. IMHO they do next to nothing other than maybe save wear and tear on your power steering, etc.

$500!!!! Call Auto Specialties(don't have # right now) here in Houston. It's $216(including belt) I think. They are the company that makes ALL the pulleys for Hypertech, MTI, Eckler's, Mid-Am, Tbyrne & everybody else that I can think of. There is another company in Baltimore or somewhere that makes them also & thoise are the $500 ones. They are both the same, meaning underdrive pulley/ Balancers. as far as I know. I am on the waiting listfor one also. They should be in by the end of the month.

For the minimal hp gains, mod hassel and decrease in accessories, I will pass on the pulley. If it was 20rwhp I would consider it. I am going to stick with Cold air, ported TB, DRM top end and Coles PCM tuning. Given the fact that I am not a drag-racer, and live in the land of a billion people (and cops), that will probably be it. Maybe long-tube headers, but that is doubtful since CA emissions is so tough and Dealers have caniption fits seeing them under the hood.

Good luck!
Remember guys 5 HP here and there add up, I will be getting pullies they worked great on my 85.

$500.00 is pretty high to install a $250.00 pulley while they already have the front of the car apart. All they have to do is pull one and bolt on the other. 10 min. job with the car apart already.
I do recommend them though.
I would definitely rethink who you are using for this project. When someone is taking you on one item theres a slight tendancy for it to happen throughout the project.

IMHO..there should be no more than a 50 dollar labor charge at the very most..In fact other than paying for the parts at approximatly 250 I believe the install should be FREE!

50 to buy him dinner at best. IMO

A 10% pulley for the 7hp for 250 is worth it but thats it.

I thought the steering rack had to be dropped to do the pulley, and you could expect to pay a little more in labor to do the pulley. $200 to $300 labor for an under drive pulley is pretty common I thought. Just MHO.

They are installing a cam, so they take all of that off anyhow. IMHO it should be free labor for the pully install.

Sorry missed that part. I'll try and get my foot out of my mouth now.

#1 - Pulley install is normally free with a cam swap since all the stuff is already out of the way.

#2 - This thread is 2 years old and you would be lucky if he even had the car still.

#3 - I had an underdrive pulley on my Z with a 1500+ watt killer audio system with no problems at all, although I had an Optima battery.
