3500 miles and im up to 9 qts of oil on my soon to be traded z06. GM has been absolutley no help, it makes me nauseous because I think the car is awesome other than this problem. What else can i do but get rid of it though, spending 50k plus on a car that blows oil like this is ridiculous.Any suggestions ?

Hi there,
Frank is on the right track, however, I must state that the test should not be run until after your car has reached 5k, as you engine will not fully seat the rings correctly before then.
I think that you will be surprized on how much the consumption drops after this point.
Best to ya, c4c5

Sherylann's Z used a quart every 500 miles. She now has 8,000 miles on her Z and has only used a quart since her last oil change at 5000 miles. My oil consumption has dropped dramatically also.

Read the oil consumption rate they had at Bragg-Smith in the feature article in the pit road section of the site....... 5 quarts a day! But after 4-9K miles ALL of the Z06 they race seated in just fine. This helped convince me that I would hang in there to get that mileage up before losing all hope.

Some have had the rings done but a lot like Frank have seen the problem go away.

A quart every 500 miles sounds excessive, but FWIW, my 99 Viper used a quart of oil the first 500 miles. The oil consumption has gradually decreased as I have accumulated mileage. I now have 7000 miles on the car and am using approximately one quart every 2500 miles. I find a quart of oil every 2500 miles to be quite satisfactory. Track driving uses more oil on the Viper as well.

Also, I have read reports of high oil consumption on the M5 and 996TT boards as well.

I am monitoring the oil consumption on our Z06 and will wait until 5000 miles or so before reaching a conclusion.

I have changed my oil twice and do not think I have used 9 quarts, just kidding. I wonder when someones exhaust catches fire from a backfire if GM will stand behind you guys then, or just leave you hanging. /phpBB/images/smiles/icon_frown.gif

I am not an engine expert as some on this board appear to be, that being said people that build racing engines laugh at these high oil consumption post. From what I'm told, high horsepower, slightly detuned race motors burn a lot of oil. Especially during the "break in" process. I'm a member of the BMW CCA and the POC, and I can assure you that the above poster is correct, especially regarding the M5. That 5 litre 394hp motor goes through more oil than Z06's and Vipers combined.

Just my 2cents worth but when you buy a race car for the street isn't it reasonable to spend $45 for motor oil for the first 5000 miles and then $5 for every 2000 miles after that? By the way, if you take your car on the track be prepared to use more oil, brake pads, rotors, etc. than in normal everyday usage.

360, I have a 01' M5 and in the last 2000 miles, they changed all the fluids out at 1200 miles because they use break in oil in the M5, the level on my dipstick has not moved. I have 3 Zaino customers that have 00' M5's and I ask them that question and 2 of the 3 cars used 1 quart in 5000 miles and the other used 1 quart in 3500 miles. I drive my M5 pretty hard the the rpm range, I will watch it over the next 3000 miles. /phpBB/images/smiles/icon_smile.gif

I think GM needs to start handing out free Mobil 1 oil. 9 Qts in 3500 miles is a little bit too much (1 qt/389 miles). I'm glad that I don't have this problem on my Z.

It's funny how one mans "huge problem" is another mans "this car isn't perfect but it rocks"

Me, I love the fact you can buy an M3, E55, or Z06 from a dealership and do anything short of crossing the Pacific Ocean with them. 60's musclecars, '70's Trans Am race cars or 80's Ferraris can't compare as all around cars.

I say drive the crap out of these toys and have some fun because we are in car heaven!!!!

Wait just a sec.

My fantastic dealer in Houston has informed us that Chevrolet recognizes the problem and is going to issue a service bulletin sometime in July, probably. He said there are new rings coming sometime, but they are not available now. Oh, and I was told that he would take my word on the oil consumption and that I should simply write down my maintenance. I have not burned as much oil as you, but I am still happy with the z06 and will await Chevrolets help.

My new rings and assorted parts are at the selling dealer. I spoke with the service director and he would like to speak to the c4c5specialist. Could you email me c4c5?
