Actually I saw this posted on CF.

If GM has a recall to replace the rings on our Zs...will you have them fix it?? Or will you just keep adding oil??

I thought about this one long and hard, I'd really hate to have them crack into the engine. But I think I would let them fix it. Tough decision!! I would definitely remove my painted fuel rail covers myself!!

Now it would be kind of
if while they had it apart we could pull off a little camshaft change!!

That stinks. They could by mine back, and I would get a new one.

Well Frank if they will let us put in the 2002 cam while she is apart...hummm, then maybe I would do it. Otherwise, mine is just down from max after 700 miles, so I don't really see the need at this point.
Maybe they can fix the piston slap and racket while the engine is cold also.

A little head work wouldn't hurt.

I guess I am one of the lucky ones....
I'm at 2200 miles and the oil is down the width of the "oil full line" on the dip stick. I've had the car up in the RPMs several times so I haven't babied the car. In fact, the "boss" complains whenever she's in the car 'cause her head bangs against the headrest!

I think I'll pass on the "fix"!

Just had my first oil change done today. The first one was on the house. Little did they know that the next eight will be also, because I got the sales department to throw in eight free oil changes with my deal (I also got $1,000 off MSRP). Anyway, the receipt said they used 6 quarts of oil on it. I thought that capacity was 6.5 quarts (7.5 optional) I checked my oil and sure enough, it was low.
It has never been low before. So I have a theory, could it be that the GM shop manual has a misprint? Maybe that is why so many have low oil. Or is it that the dealer short changed me because it was free? WTF?
Any suggestions?

HI FOLKS,
ABOUT THE RING CONCERN. THE CF HAS HINTED ABOUT DIFFERENT SCENARIOS THAT MAY OCCUR TO RESOLVE THIS PROBLEM. HAS GM ACKNOWLEDGED THIS ISSUE YET?. WOULD ASK DAVE HILL GIVE US A CLUE OF WHAT MAY BE THE FIX, SHORT OF RIPPING APART THE ENGINE? ARE THERE SPECIFIC PRODUCTION DATES THAT ENCOMPASS THIS PROBLEM OR JUST RANDOM OCCURRANCES. SORRY FOR BEING SO WORDY , BUT TIS IS AN IMPORTANT DISCUSSION TOPIC.

NAPVETTE,

I think we are all going to hear something SOON. The thing to do now is to document your oil usage with GM...make a record!!

There must be something to this 7 quart thing. Have seen others with the same deal, me too, it takes 7 quarts to get it to full line. ?????

Just came back from the auto parts store with a can Mobil 1, added it an now it reads full. You can be sure that next time the dealer changes my oil, they will add 7 quarts.
Kind of makes me mad, because I went in with a full crankcase, not really needing an oil change with 1600 miles on my car, only to come out with the oil on the add line.
I sure hope they used Mobil 1.
Something to confirm next time.
