What the heck is the "HOOD SEAL" supposed to do?

Hey all,

I was just paging through an Ecklers catalog. Came across the (leading edge) "hood seal" for C5's. Now, I know what it says, and see the picture and all, but.. Is there REALLY any benefit to this thing? Is it supposed to "trap" air that's entered the car via the underside/front of the car, directing it to the intake? If that's so, then isn't the vacuum of the intake going to suck in all the air (that it can) that's there anyway?

What am I missing? Does this thing only work "in theory?" Just wondering if anyone could shed some light on this for me.

Thanks!

Kirk,

I think it has something to do with sucking something from your wallet.

After cleaning the engine compartment, I installed a hood seal and after two weeks of driving the engine compartment seems to stay cleaner. After all it's only $15 from Mid America......
So, HarleyB, you're saying that it just pretty much "sucks?" LOL /phpBB/images/smiles/icon_wink.gif

All,

If it's anything like my Zaino order from Ecklers, you'll be waiting a lifetime.

I think HarleyB hit the nail on the head.

Don't know if it does any good or not, but you can go to Home Depot or neighborhood hardware store and buy self sticking weather strip for about $2.50! And no shipping charges, or waiting for the big brown truck!

I bought mine two years ago and my engine started to look like it had chrome and paint and carbon fiber!! I SWEAR by it. My wife thinks this is the only mod I have had to make!! /phpBB/images/smiles/icon_biggrin.gif

I don't have the hood seal and got the surprise of my life when I replaced the stock air filter with a new Fram unit. (I have the stock airbox removed at the time, and just had the air filter zip tied in place.
I went for my usual post washing 100 mph blowdrying, but when I gave it some gas, it friggin almost died on me. The check engine light came on etc..

Well the water had got on the new paper filter and caused it to fold sideways when the engine was trying to suck in more air.. NOT fun..
Kirk, the seal works good, it keeps water and dirt out of the engine area. Who took that pix of your car /phpBB/images/smiles/icon_frown.gif

If you have replaced the stock air filter lid w/ one that has a large cut-out area, you will see that water rolling down the hood will fall thru the nose/hood gap and directly onto the air filter element.
This is especially noticable during washing!

The seal plugs up the gap and keeps all water out. It doesn't really manage airflow and thats not what I bought it for.
Kirk, the next time your over my house ask me to show you the seal. /phpBB/images/smiles/icon_smile.gif and take another pix of your car.

I have the hood seal and think it keeps the engine bay a little cleaner.

Question... the adhesive that is on the hood seal... does anyone know what type is used? My hood seal could use some new adhesive but want to get one that will not harm the paint that it adheres to.

Also think that besides having the adhesive in the bottom, the makers could have put some on the flat side that lays against the front edge... my hood pull the front off when I open and close the hood now.

Put a light coating of silicon or vaseline on the rubber....then it won't stick to her....err your hood!

Don,

I ordered mine from Eckler's and it didn't came with any kind of instructions. I looked on their catalog and for some reason, they had the flat side up. I played with it a little bit and decided to installed with the flat side down (bottom) and the adhesive side to the front edge. It looks very nice this way and everytime you close the hood, it would press the seals against the front edge and not pulling it out. I haven't have any problem with it yet. Mine had only been on for 4 weeks, will wait and see what happen.
