When racing, at what rpm are you shifting at?

When giving friends a ride, I like to launch her a couple of times for show and have been shifting close to redline (6200-6500) and was wondering where everyone else is shifting at.

Don,

When showing off
I usually only take it to 6000 rpms max. If I'm in a "get it on mode", then I will take it close, but not quite, to 6500 rpms.

After I installed my Vortex and PRTs, I gave a Buddy a ride and was amazed how fast it rapped out. Caught me by suprise!!

I think Darth Vetter was shifting at 6500 when his car was mostly stock and he was running 12.5 @ 114.

Just fractions short of hitting the limiter....Sadly, I have hit it quite a few times, mostly in 1st and 2nd.

John is right, 6500. I have hit the rev-limiter more than once.

I try to shift at the peak of the HP before it starts droping which is around 6100-6200 rpms. If you look at most of your dyno sheets you will see that your peak HP is not at 6500 rpms. I was always told to shift on the way up for optimum performance.
If I remember correctly GMs numbers are at 6000 rpms.

On a road course, drag strip, or when I want to get on it, I shift at redline. I've been told that this is best as it puts you in the fat part of the power band in the next gear. On the 1-2 shift I shift a hare early since that one comes up fast.

I started shifting 1-2-3 at the point in my dyno graph where the hp and torque curves crossed. This was around 5-5500 rpm. I shifted 3-4+ at redline.

Then I tried upping my shift points for 1-2-3, and examined my ETs. Shifting higher produced better results. I think 6200 is a good comprise in 1st and 2nd, and then 6500 after that.

Now if I can just learn to shift faster..
