An addon to Vettemasters information,
There are 2 different part numbers for the rings sets, 1 for standard bore, and 1 for .25 oversized.
They are on SPAC cases for individual replacement, as I have 3 vehicles waiting.

I spoke with my contact at GMPT at the start of last week and he confirmed that the revised ring pack--a higher tension oil ring and a second ring with a "Napier type" scraper profile--did make SOP MY02 on LS6 and, about two weeks after SOP, went in LS1.

Supposedly, these rings are now available through regular service channels rather than a case-by-case basis via the technical assistance network. My understanding is the rings themselves are supplied and the dealer service organization installs them on the engine's existing pistons.

I was wondering if Ms. Mako Mechanic could confirm that .025 over rings are available. I ask because GMPT keeps telling me that 99-02 blocks can only be overbored .020 and 97-98 can only go .010. I wonder if I'm getting bad info.

Hi Hib--
I have used 12 quarts of oil in 8,000 miles & used 2 quarts during my Calif. dealer's 1,000 mile oil consumption test. My dealer said the rings aren't available yet & they probably won't be available until Sept. What can I do, or who can my service manager contact in order to get the replacement rings NOW?

I just saw the October issue of Corvette Fever. They have a Q&A question for C5 owners called C5 Solutions and someone posed the oil consumption question cause he was concerned about his pending '02 purchase.

Although, the editor said he didn't know specifics, he did venture out enuff to say that there has been acknowledgment of an oil consumption issue and that rings were being replaced on effected engines and his theory on it was:

- ring tension or
- rings with the finish of the cylinder wall

I have felt that ring tension with the 9lb ring pack could have been the issue and why it has not been a common issue maybe due to quality variances.

At least one writer had the balls to venture out and make an educated guess rather than to hide behind the corporate skirt and blame driver's driving habits. High rpm, low load driving... Phooey!

I just haven't had the nerve or place to do a high speed run.

Use a quart every 1500-2000 miles on both Z's. Not bad. /phpBB/images/smiles/icon_biggrin.gif

I changed my oil again at 5000 miles with 7qts of Mobil-1 10W-30. I never looked at the dipstick again until I reached 6000 miles a few days ago. I was exactly 1 qt low. This is worse than the qt per 1200 to 1300 miles I was experiencing prior to reaching 5000 miles. Not good. /phpBB/images/smiles/icon_flaming.gif

I haven't read all of this thread, but I have my own opinion about this problem.

First of all, I agree with 1Fastdog regarding the ring swap, if that is the route you decide to take. It's not a big deal. I think GM provides a loner during the fix. Correct me if I wrong. If I had a oil burner, I would first do this. Drain my Mobil 1, and fill with a 5W30 petroleum base oil, and drive for another 2500 miles or so. This should stop the burning. I have never heard of trying to break an engine in with synthetic oil! It can be done, but it takes about 12,000 or more miles.

I had one customer who dynoed at 315 with 10,000 miles and 326 with 44,000 with absolutely no changes to his engine except the mileage. What does that tell you.

I would then install Torco's semi-synthetic T4R Racing Oil which has a ring sealing additive called poly iso butylene. The alcohol burning dragsters that ran this synthetic blend reported much better compression, and less blow by than any other oil they had used. The benefit of the synthetic part of the blend was better e.t.s

My former background: I was the Technical Support Manager and Southwestern Sales Manager for Torco Racing Oils for 4 years. Torco has been a big name in Racing Syntetics and Parafinic base oils since 1950.

We had customers like Warren Johnson, Connie Kaletta, Alan Johnson (Brother and engine builder for Blaine Johnson before his death, Elmer Trett, Star Racing, and hundreds of other race teams and a multitude of professional engine builders and I can tell you this. None of these guys ever tried to break in an engine with synthetic oil.

The reason is simple. Synthetic oil is too good. Mobil 1 has a base oil of poly alpha olephin, which has lubricity far beyond the standard petroleum oil. If there is a downside to synthetic base oil, it is that it cannot hold as many addtitives as the parafinic base oils.

Many of the racers used chrome faced top rings, which will not "wear in" if they cannot wear.

Once the rings have fully seated, a change to a synthetic or quality semi-synthetic would be my choice. Mobil 1 is ok, but there are many superior synthetics on the market. Torco, in my opinion is one of them.

Added 1/2 Qt the other day after 3000 miles. Didn't bother me at all.... But, my LT1 never burnt a drop.

Hi there,
I can speak of the EXACT REASON for the increased oil issues, and the causes.
Just remember, that the first compression ring is NOT being replaced, it is the second compression ring, and the oil expander ring.
The first compression ring is fine, and beds in correctly. The second compression does not exhibit enough tension to correctly seal above 3000 rpm, causing flutter, or something along those lines.
Under every case, once the second compression ring, and the oil expander have been changed, the comsumption has dropped to less than 1 qt in 2000 miles, which is acceptable by GM standards.
There is not one case where this fix has not worked.
Adding conventional oil is not an option here, simply because it is not breakin that causes this issue, it is ring scraping tension, nothing more, or less.
There is NO flame intended, only fact, so please take this as such.
