I have done some exhaustive work on this subject, talked to 5 top engine builders, and have come to this conclusion. The best break-in is done with a quality 30wt oil.
What I found is
1 drive new for 200 miles
2 change oil and filter to 30wt kendall etc
and drive for 500 miles
3 change oil and filter to 30 wt again and drive for another 2500 miles
4 change oil to mobile 1 or preferably red line
5 enjoy much lowere oil consumption and a properly brokin in engine.
In closing I bet GM wish they would have considered this solution...
Please share youre thoughts....

Let's see - I'm gonna pay $50 grand for the car of the century and go through the most complicated oil change schedule in the history of the automobile. What is wrong with this picture?

I have always followed the manufacturer's recommendation as per the owner's manual.

Having worked at Detroit Diesel Corporation as a Senior Engineering Technician with over 33 years experience I have been actively involved in testing and abusing heavy duty 2 and 4 cycle diesel and alternate fueled engines. We work closely with various oil and filter manufacturers, and are closely involved with lubrication and metallurgical engineers. I have personally run engines with water, and or fuel diluted lube oil and sometimes NO oil at all.
Bottom line: Follow the manufacturer's recommendation...they have tested and evaluated all methods, and know what's best.

I did a close copy of that procedure, but only ran mineral oil from about 150 to 1000 miles, then switched to 5w30 M1. Now have 1900 mi and have burned maybe 1/4 quart, just enough to see a change on the stick. Its funny how many of the top builder/tuners suggest this type of break in oil with these motors. GM doesn't because most C5 owners are not going to come back in 1000mi to the dealer to pay for an oil change to swap out a mineral oil, so they go from the start with a syn oil. Several euro car makers do this, and of course they cover the 1000mi change for free. GM do that? Yeah right!
