I guess I'm tone deaf.
I don't have a problem with the Bose. Maybe I'm just old.

SPDY - I have to agree with you on the sound system. The one (and only) disappointment I have had was the sound quality. My 99 Z28 Vert with the Monsoon system sounds much better. Now you got me thinking about a swap? Hmmm

Ditto all the above.

Maybe one set of golf clubs absorb engine noise and a second set absorbs road noise.

When I get my straight through Borla (no side cans) Z06 system installed, I'll report on the improvement in audio system quality.

I must say, though, the sound in my Lightning was nothing short of pure ear candy...

SPDY:

Relax. Remember the whole is greater than the sum of its parts. When you start to isolate and examine particular components, then of course you will easily find deficiencies. Look what members of this forum have done to their $50K Vettes. Intake mods, exhaust mods, appearance mods, and etc. And this is the best Vette yet. I just look at the stereo as a stock product that works fairly well, but has considerable room for improvement.

As for what I intend to do, Alpine makes a DIN and half head unit that fits right where the stock head untit is with no adapters or extra trim pieces required. They also make a 6 or 12 CD changer that connects to the Alpine head unit. JL Audio www.jlaudio.com makes a Sub-Woofer stealth box that fits perfectly in the large storage compartment in the back of the Z06. Way cool. JL also makes some sweet 6" spekers to replace those Bose beauties your so fond of. Then you get a couple of JL amps for some power and your all set. My stereo guy wants to use three diffrent amps for the Z. For all the components and installation. They want ball park $2k, but the car will sound awsome. right now I can't decide between a stereo upgrade or some intake mods.

I have been reading that the FRC partition has been really cutting down the noise and in some cases improving the audio quality. Sounds like a cheap, and nice looking mod, to try out.

Whe I initially hit I-95, you really hear the road noise and it is hard to hear the tunes, but after about 30 minutes, my ears get a little accustomed to the road noise and i can start picking up words again
What'd you expect?

Man, I must be old like Frank.
The sound system sounds to my ears like the best I've ever owned. Even sound better than my home system. I very rarely have it on at more than background noise levels. Maybe for the Doors or Led Zep. There's that age thing again. Normally, you don't want to drown out the sweet mechanical noises.

I have to agree with Frank and Ron (rippied.z06) that the audio system seems to be decent. I had Pink Floyd's Medal in the player the other day and "Echoes" sounded pretty good. I started to get goose bumps flashing back to that concert in the early 70s. Maybe I am old too.
Of course, I have never been one to blow a lot of money ($1k to $3k) on a car stereo. I used to run open headers on a couple of my cars and you can only hear the sweet sound of raw HP.
I have to laugh at the ricer boys that have their cars bah-booming down the road. But hey, it's a personal preference thing.

I need to apologize too. I have NOTHING against golfers. I live on a golf course...

However, I too must be suffering from middle age Hot Rod Itis. If GM would go for it, I would exchange my entire stero system for a plucketa, plucketa big block for aural entertainment... Hell, I might even give them a hundred or so to boot...

I've seen you guys posting over and over how you don't need good tunes in the Z06 because the motor sounds so nice.

Well, I think that's a bunch of BS. I just took the car on my first extended roadtrip this past weekend (500 miles roundtrip, in one day) and all I can say is the tunes suck!

Why the F... would GM build a 50k car with such poor accoustics. I'm ready to get a new system now. I hope somebody at GM reads this and makes some changes, it probably just needs a new amplifier and/or speakers.

Come on now, sure you don't really need tunes around town or when hauling ass somewhere, but on a long trip, with the wife nagging, it just sounded like crap. The FM reception was poor and distorted at high volumes, and you could bearely tell what song was on at mid volumes, and CDs sound only marginally better.

My 98 coupe looked like it had the same speakers, and it sounded much better!

What's up?

OK, I'm done bitching, just had to get it off my chest.

Anybody else feel the same?

Anybody replace the system? If so, what kind and how much?

Oh yeah, the trip was a blast, 85 mph average and plenty of bursts over 100. Pity the fool that tried to pass me.

Spdy:

I noticed that too, but you get used to it. The radios should be the same, so it has to be the interior.

I hated the system in my coupe to the point that it lasted 10 days before I 86'd it!!!

I believe you can get the best sound in an FRC but you will still need to work on the cabin AND put in a real stereo.

Bose is NOT an audio company. They are a marketing company. Marketing is what they do best. Next time, order a standard radio so you are throwing away less.

------------------
I'm with you SPDY! For $50k I want it all. The sound systems in all my C4s were much better and I didn't have to deal with dividers and such. It just doesn't make sense to have to go aftermarket in this day and age to get decent sound out of this caliber of a vehicle.

On the "other" forum, someone outlined what can be done to improve the fidelity while still utilizing the stock head unit. Apparently, the head unit has a direct four channel out capability that allows bypassing all the Bose conditioning crap. This way, better speakers and amps can be utilized with the stock head unit.

------------------
Ihad a Bose top-o-the-line in my '89 & it blew goats compared to the Z's. Now it ain't the best there is, but nobody is going to break into my Vette to steal it either!

Radio, what radio, I don't even know where the on button is. Maybe I ordered the radio delete.

I guess the car spends too much time on the trailer and not enough time on the track.

****** Frank--I have noticed the same thing, solved my noisy transmission sounds by removing my hearing aid,I get much better sounds after i installed my 45rpm record player(mono records only)and removed the passenger side airbag and installed a 8 track player--still want to add a Vibrasonic unit from my old Goat. And yes--the sounds in my coupe are far superior to the hardtop because of the lack of sound damping material and shape of rear trunk area.

After driving my M5 around my Vette sound system sounds like an AM radio, and not a very good one at that.
