Can body shops match Milennium Yellow?

The dreaded has happened! Somehow there was about a 2" scratch on the rear quarterpanel of my 2002 MY Z. I took it to the local GM dealer who suggested just touching it up and buffing, but that didn't work at all - you can still very visibly see the scratch because the touch up paint is much darker for some reason. Now they say to fix it they will have to repaint most of the rear quarterpanel and possible the bumper as well. My question is, are they going to be able to match this to the rest of the car? I don't know if they have much experience with Milennium Yellow or not. The scratch is low and out of the way, and it has been touched up so its not that bad, and I don't want to take a risk of really not liking the way that section of the car looks. Anyone have experience?

Thanks,
Aaron

Matching MY

MY is a 3 coat process with tint even in the clear coat. I've been told that manufacturers are not allowed to ship this clear coat across state lines (federal gov't) so no body shops have it.

Several people on other boards have confirmed this when they had to have paint work done on their MY. They say it does not match - it's close but you can tell if you look close.

NO NO NO!!!!!!!

To fix a few rock chips on my old 2000 coupe, they ended up having to repaint the entire front clip of the car 5 TIMES.

This was after 3 months and sending pieces to factorys to be matched and using special cameras.

THE NEW PAINT DID NOT EVER MATCH.

A COMPLETE NIGHTMARE!!!!!!

Just ask Candyman, he can tell you it will not match. Yes, the clearcoat does have a tint in it and that is the main reason why it is hard to match.

But, with that said. Why can DuPont or someone else sell the clear with the tint in it? Not much different than shipping anyother hazardous material.

I'll stick with sold colors. Love my Torch RED!!

Had a friend that had to replace nose on a MY. Three times and it still did not match. He then researched and found out that it had to be primed white first before all the other stuff and the colored clear coat. Came out great on the last attempt.

My body shop which is very very good has to repaint my front clip because I torpedoed a woodchuck. They are extremely skilled so I hope mine matches :( IF it doesn't it goes back......

I am in Canada so I wonder if the same stupid shipping rules apply...............

I would attempt to find a body shop that is willing to purchase the Dupont formulas using the GM code numbers. Do not try to use a PPG or BASF products on this color if at all possible. Each manufacturer uses their own pigments to match colors and if you can use the OEM (Dupont) manufacturer your more likely to get the best match.

I am a bodyman by trade, we paint multi stage paint jobs everyday, cadillac was one of the first companys with a tri coat, we use computer matching and dupont paint products....I am sure we wouldn't have a problem matching the my corvette, also when the painter says he may have to paint the bumper it is to get a better match....Good luck with your body shop experiance as there are some un-trustworthy shops out there

Well look at my signiture pic. See if you can tell the difference. You be the judge. Im thinking about a custom paint job that will cover the entire rear end.

Disclaimer: Please note that under some lighting conditions or angles even the doors and hood do not appear to match. But you can see a slight difference in the rear clip and the qtrs.

Bought my '01 TR used from a dealer it did not have the factory plate cover for the front bumper. Made the dealer order one for me.
Gave it to a friend of mine to paint, he used a German paint company and he painted it without my car. He gave it back to me on Saturday and told me to be careful cause it was still wet. I said, dude thats not the color of my car it looks to red."

Well put it next to the car today can't believe how perfect the match is, looks like it was on there from the get.

Gotta love that red.

I had rocker panel damage from delivery and the dealer body shop repainted it. Looks fine to me and know one ever said anything about it not matching.

Find a good painter. :D
Wich shop did you use? I have a scratch on my drivers side rocker
under the car I would like to have painted but want to take it to someone who can paint MY.

Thanks,

I know how you feel...

I had my nose replaced and painted on my Yellow Z after a minor "fender bender" and the shop matched the color perfectly. The shop I used specializes in Vettes and used all the OEM paint codes. MY can definitely be matched. The "orange peel" was slightly different, but not enough to warrant a repaint.

Thx2.net hit it right on the head. Find a good a painter! It is an art after all...

Good luck and don't rush it. Look around.

Mike

PS. The car looks even better now because the shop re-installed the nose and actually took the time to align all the seams properly, which the factory neglected to do!
