Torque is the the rotational force produced by the engine. Like robiferreti said, it's what you feel when you drive. Horsepower on the other hand, is not a force, but actually a measure of the amount of work that can be done over time by an engine.

That's why a Honda S2000 is quick, but doesn't feel powerful. Good hp, but no torque.

i think i grasp the concept of the torque and horsepower now. torque is the force that makes the car move and thus it is the sole determiner of acceleration. horsepower is the rate at which work is done and thus it is how much (horse)POWER you have. according to the logical reasoning in the article high end torque is always welcome becuase it makes it possible to utilize gearing to ahceinve maximum horsepower.
