Starting Problem - Loud grinding noise

I recently purchased a 2002 z06. Ive had it about two weeks now. It has 6000miles on it and has been garaged a long time. Its pretty much brand new. However over the past two weeks starting the car, has progressively sounded worse and worse. To the point where today I went to start the car and it sounded like a mess of gears just grinding teeth together. Horrible sound and I instantly stopped trying to start it. Im not completely sure what the problem is. Its either the starter itself or I am told it could be the "fly wheel" has been rusting over the years and is starting to erode. Now im no mechanic so im not sure what a fly wheel even is entirely =/. Has anyone experienced this problem?

Thanks

Welcome to :z:

Sounds like a starter to me. I doubt the flywheel has eroded in 8 years (unless the car was under water). More likely the starter is not fully engaging causing that noise which is the starter gear grinding away at the flywheel teeth.

Think you will have to remove a portion of the passenger side exhaust to access the starter if its still the stock exhaust system. Its harder if you have Long Tube Headers since you will have to at least loosen, or possibly remove, the headers on the passenger side to get the starter out. Once you have removed/moved the necessary portion of the exhaust, it should be a pretty easy swap.
